Why this must be read: A brand new, hot off the preses [livejournal.com profile] ci5_boxoftricks Bang Bang story. :)

This is a crossover with a British programme of the same era as Pros called The Racing Game. I'd never heard of it before I helped Dawnwind edit this story in preparation for this year's Big Bang. I rented the DVD from Netflix and it's a super cool series. You do not need to view the series to read this story. Dawn gives enough information that it's easy to understand who Sid and Chico are. If you're interested in investigating more, there is info here. (Note: for some odd reason, the IMDB page is down so I've put a link to the amazon.uk page.)

Summary of For Kicks from the author: After preventing the kidnapping of a wealthy Middle-Eastern business man's son, Bodie and Doyle are assigned to keep Karim Khorsandi safe until he signs an important oil contract. They team up with private investigators Halley and Barnes who are guarding Khorsandi's racehorse but it all goes awry. Bodie and Doyle have to unravel a complex knot of family loyalties and politics to find their suspect. They'd prefer to have stayed at home playing kinky sex games.

I hear a lot of calls for nice long case fic. Well, here is it. Full of investigation and the lads and danger. I think it's a great romp around London and the countryside, and an interesting look into the world of horse racing.

"You and him, been friends long?" Chico asked casually.

Bodie glanced up at the man. He hadn't sensed any tension from his partner when Barnes arrived. Doyle trusted him, he must be all right. The lad had a sunny disposition that matched his bright curls, but there was something watchful, something deep lurking behind his cheerful smile.

"Five years, we're civ--"

"Civil servants. Yeah, 'eard it, 'aven't I?" Chico cocked his head. "Me and 'im, we've talked every now and again after these matches for the last year."

There was something in the way he said it: Chico didn't quite believe their cover stories. Bodie's hackles raised, and he went on the defensive. What did this little git think he knew?

"See, I'm a private detective meself," Chico continued, his posture relaxed and loose, but obviously aware of Bodie's hostility. "And I got this feeling—" He tapped his breastbone with a wink. "You two are MI6, maybe?"

"MI6?" Bodie snorted inelegantly. "Not bloody likely."

You might be interested to know that The Racing Game is based on a book by Dick Francis, and Sid Halley is one of the only characters (possiby the only character) he featured in more than one book.

Be warned, the Dick Francis books (now the brand has been picked up by his son, Felix) are addictive. If you read several of them in a row you will quickly see that he wrote to a template, but he did it very, very well. And it's amazing how much stuff can be related to horse racing!

There are four Sid Halley books, but the other series by DF features a man named Kit and his twin sister. There are two books with Kit. I have read every book the man wrote--and all the books co-written with Felix. I am waiting to get my hands on the latest one by Felix!

Ooh, there's more than one book about Kit and his sister?

Um. Could you tell me (or tell me where to find) the names of the books for Kit?
