Small Fandom Overview for "Wizards of Waverly Place"
Hello, this month I am one of the drivers of the van but before we starts let us take a closer look into this fandom. I hope the journey will have no potholes even if English isn't my mother tongue. :-)
I tried to avoid spoiler in this overview but there are still some which are white coloured. Please mark the parts to see them.
Fandom Overview for "Wizards of Waverly Place"
How can I describe a series like Wizard of Waverly Place or WoWP like the fans call the show? At the first look WoWP is a typically Disney series and nothing more than a fun show for young children and teenagers. Basically it is a show that every adult would avoid.
...Right?
No. Sure, there are lots of jokes for kids but if you really look deeper you see… still a fun show. Sometimes you see a more serious background but almost all episodes are more lighthearted and really… this is the reason I started to watch this show. If I need drama, suspence or hot, dirty love I would watch HBO instead of Disney Channel.
So if you also search a way to distract yourself from the problems of the real world let me show you the joys of WoWP.
The Plot
The show centers on the Russos, an Italian-Mexican family, which include the parents with their three kids and more than often also the two best friends of the oldest children. Together they live in the Waverly Place, a street in the Greenwich Village section of New York where the family has a restaurant, the Subway Station.
The three siblings have one major secret. Their Italien-American dad was a wizard. He gave up magic so that he could marry his big love, a Mexican-American mortal. Nevertheless he could inherit his magic so that his three children are wizards in training who have magic lessons with their father and try to keep their secret safe during their normal life in the mortal world.
Naturally there is a catch. Only one of the Russo kids may keep his magic. The moment when they all complete their wizard training, there will have a wizard competition. The winner will be the family wizard and the other two will be mortals without special abilities. So it’s also understandable that the parents want to teach their children a life without magic.
There are 4 seasons with 105 episodes with one movie to choose the family wizard.
The Characters
For a Disney show there are lots of characters but basically you have a main cast with six people who are part of almost every episode. The recurring cast includes about twenty people so that I chose the characters which are mostly involved in fanfiction.
The maincast
Alex Russo
Our main character is the second child and only girl of the Russo family. She is portrayed by Selena Gomez.
She is a sly and outgoing girl who is sometimes rude to her family and friends who often try to skip school or wizard training. Alex has also the talent to get into trouble because of her constant schemes which usually involves magic
Nevertheless she often shows her generosity, loyalty and compassion. Art and to play the drums are two of her hobbies. The last one is a reason for her (and Justins) plan B. If they can’t be wizards they want to form a band.
She has various love interests but only three are important. Riley in S1, Dean in S2 and in the last two seasons Mason.
Justin Russo
Justin played by David Henrie is almost the complete opposite of Alex which is one of the reasons for their … special relationship. They often drive the other one crazy but they still have a strong bond and love each other deeply.
He is responsible, sensible and kind-hearted. Also he is very smart and basically a nerd who is part of clubs such as ‘alien languages.’ He is unathletic which is a problem as he starts to participate in a Monster-Hunting course as a way to continue his wizard studies.
He has one main love interest called Juliet (and various short crushes/relationships).
Max Russo (+ Maxine Russo + Roy)
The youngest child portrayed by Jake T. Austin (and later by Bailee Madison) is often used as the clown of the show because of his naivety. Like Alex he often uses his magic for mischief and laziness. He is very out-going and has a vivid imagination. At the beginning of the show he is behind his siblings in the wizard competition but slowly he gets a better chance to win.
One of the reasons for this change is his transformation in Maxine, a younger female version of himself which result through a failed spell of Justin and Alex.
Another one is Roy, his conscience, which is portrayed by Moises Arias. Through an accident Max separate from this part of himself. Slowly they start to become two different people and the siblings must find a way to put them together again in one person.
He has various love interests but there are mostly short-term except Talia, a mortal girl.
Jerry & Theresa Russo
The parents of the three siblings and owners of the Waverly Sub Station are Jerry who is Half-American, Half-Italian, and Theresa, who is Half-American, Half-Mexican.
Jerry (David DeLuise) gave up his magic to marry his big love because marriages between wizards and mortals are forbidden. He teaches his children the art of magic so that they will be great wizards.
Even though he is often annoyed by his children he loves them deeply and especially Alex is the apple of his eye.
Theresa, portrayed by Maria Canals Barrera, is the more serious parent who hates magic and wishes for her children a happy and peaceful mortal life.
She is self-declared proud Latina and wants to teach her children their Mexican heritage. She is a little bit overprotective of Justin and Max and especially the last one is often treated as the baby of the family by her.
Harper Finkle
The role portrayed by Jennifer Stone is Alex best friend since childhood and used to have a crush on Justin before she starts a relationship with his best friend Zeke. She self expresses herself through her sometimes crazy clothes which she designs herself. Nevertheless she must sometimes fight to overcome her insecurity.
She is a hard-working student and is the type of person who sees the glass half-full instead of half-empty.
For Theresa and Jerry she is something like a second daughter especially after she finds out the truth about the Russo family.

Justin/Alex
Okay, I know what you think… “Moment, didn’t she mention that Justin and Alex are brother and sister?” And yes, it’s true but still this is The Pairing of the fandom and it really deserves the capitals. Over 60 % of the published fic in this fandom is about Jalex, which is the pairing name.
Even people who don’t like the fact that this is an incest pairing can’t deny the amazing chemistry between these two characters and the way how they complement the other one. Justin as the good guy and Alex as the badguy woman. Lots of jokes or hints in the series about this pairing are another reason that the fanbase is so big.
Also the pairing is so … obvious in some areas that even TV Tropes devoted a complete page for them which is now available on Fetish Fuel.

Justins big love and most important relationship. They both must fight against their parents to be in a relationship (hello Romeo & Juliet!) but soon they start to date. The relationship has various problems to solve. For example later Juliet becomes the slave of a mummy and Justin needs to rescue her. But through an accident with Mason she loses her vampire abilities and with this her internal youth. After that she changes into an old woman and her and Justin break up. This is the end of their love... or not?
Alex/Mason
This is together with Justin/Alex the pairing with the most controversies. Either you love the pairing or you can’t stand it. There are few people who don’t have an opinion of these two. I must admit I’m more part of the second group but I try my best to be neutral.
Alex and Mason meet and fall in love through their shared passion for art. Mason gives Alex a necklace which will light up if the person who wears it loves the person who put it on. Later this necklace will play an important role for them as it is the proof of Masons true love for Alex.
Despite their love visible through the necklace they often break up and get together again. Reasons for these breakups are various. One of them is the possibility that Alex could lose her magic and become mortal so that a relationship between them would be forbidden. Another reason is more mundane. It is Masons jealousy and his belief that Alex cheated on him.
Nevertheless they try to be happy but are they really the real love for each other?

Mostly you can find the fandom on Fanfiction.net but still... there are also various communities about WoWP which are mostly dead. Maybe no surprise because it's a kids show and LJ is more for adults than for example fanfiction.net.
The show plays in the same universe as “Hannah Montana”, “”That’s so Raven” (and the sequel), “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” (+ the sequel) and “I’m in the Band.” Also Selena Gomez is one of the new Disney stars so it should be no surprise that there are lots of crossovers or RPF (like indisneyrpf or davidselena but I will not talk about the cuteness of David and Selena even if they are amazing together).

- Mason Greyback (a transfer student from England who is Juliets ex-boyfriend and Alex current boyfriend who struggles with his fate as lycanthrope)
- Dean Moriarty (Alex boyfriend in season 2 who is interested in cars and has problems to show his feelings)
- Stevie Nichols (the main villain in season 3 who wants to rebel against the law of wizard competition between siblings which later destroys her friendship with Alex)
- Gertrude "Gigi" Hollingsworth (a mortal who visits the same school as Alex and torments Alex und Harper since kindergarten)
- Uncle Kelbo (Jerry’s brother who got the magic after Jerry married)
- Professor Crumbs (the headmaster of WizTech and something like the Albus Dumbeldore of WoWP)

Haha, idk why but Disney has lots of Incest-pairings but Justin/Alex is by far the biggest. Maybe no surprise if you know that the first idea was that Justin and Alex should be best friends instead of siblings.

And yep, it's Katniss. I can't wait for that movie to come out, and then on to the casting speculation for the sequel. No matter how much I can't wait to see this movie, I'm even more fascinated with finding out who they'll get to play Finnick.

I also hope that there will be more fics after the movie. Maybe also some AUs because this genre is almost dead at the moment and I really want to read a fic where Katniss and Peeta had a relationship pre-movie or a fic where Katniss is really pregnant.
