Why this must be read: This is categorised on the Hermit Library as Hurt/Comfort, Angst, but I'd disagree with the former (since much of the hurt occurs before the story), and possibly the latter too. There's definitely enough action/adventure in it to keep me reading.
Set two years after the series' end, it begins with Avon and Vila meeting on a prison ship. Vila has gone back to thieving and Avon has been held prisoner by the Federation ever since Gauda Prime. All common features of a PGP. The Avon-Vila relationship in this reminds me of a Robert Holmes script, and there are references to his episodes scattered through the narrative. Of course, as is common with PGPs they rejoin the rebellion, but it's not initially Avon that the rebels are after. There are some original characters amongst both rebels and Federation, but also canon characters on both sides to keep everyone happy, and there are some delightful snippets of characterisation in there.
