It's a common observation that the episode "Nerve" is a turning point where the story, the themes and the protagonist all begin down a darker path leading from the Aurora Chair. Lancer shows us the true beginning of this path for John, before he reaches the Gammak Base.
He'd carried idealism as his shield and hope as his sword for a long time, it was hard to put them down for another weapon.
