There Once Were Two People by Kixxa (PG-13)

Why this must be read:
Kixxa tells us a story about whistling in the dark, about two very physically affectionate friends reduced to comforting each other with words alone. Kixxa tells a story that makes my eyes burn at the end, with one image that distills the creeping horror of the instant when fear becomes loss.

"There were two people..." she begins, licking her lips nervously, hoping that her words will reach him.

"Two, huh? Seems a good place to start..."

"Yeah," she says, breathing heavily with relief, her words rushing to fill the space between them. "Two...a man and a woman...like before. And, and they found a planet, or...or it found them. It came toward them like a pebble skimming over water."

"Nice...!" he breathes.

"She...er...she was always good at spinning tales."

John chuckles and coughs a little.

"It was the third planet out from the sun. He was happy and said, 'Close enough is near enough'."

"I don't like him already. So did this sorry excuse decide to land?"

"Hey!" She laughs. "Who's telling this story?"

Thanks so much, babe. And that icon, in the context of the fic, is heartrending.
