Why this must be read: Deneba is adept at capturing the shock of a different perspective, and the clash when one character communicates a hard or personal truth that changes another character's view of the world. In this story, Deneba shows us a wounded John exploring the boundaries of the dark place he finds himself in, the place he had to construct for himself to survive prolonged torture, the place he needs to come out from if he can (if he wants to). It squeezes my heart each time I read it.

This was the way pain should be. Pain should accompany injury, signal instincts to protect the wound. There was something unclean about pain that ravaged nerve endings, that nearly burst your heart and made you scream your throat raw but left no damage. Twisting you to crave it was unholy.
