Why this must be read: After John falls overboard during a storm, Sherlock jumps into the ocean after him. They find themselves stranded on a small island where John busies himself trying to keep them alive by building shelters and carving fishing hooks while Sherlock's sanity begins to deteriorate without the stimulation of city life and his all important cases. The writing is viceral and uncompromising; there aren't pat resolutions to what the men are going through both physically and mentally. This is one of those fabulous stories that doesn't let up until the very end where there's as happy of an ending as we could hope for in the circumstances.
