Why this must be read: Sherlock checks in to an exclusive hotel that caters to a specific clientele, investigating a crime at Mycroft's behest. As his brother raved about the establishment and is paying for his stay, Sherlock decides to sample the hotel's wares and selects a sub for the night; a broken, ex-Army doctor named John.

If BDSM stories aren't your thing, it's best to skip this one but you'll be missing out on a neat little mystery and some keen character insights. (Even if it's an AU, Sherlock and John are still very much themselves.) The sex scenes are robust, Sherlock's deductions ring true, the dialogue is cracking and, best of all, we're treated with a happy ending. What more could you ask for? (Besides a sequel, that is.)

I hope you enjoy it. I prefer dom!Sherlock/sub!John stories, which there aren't quite as many as dom!John/sub!Sherlock. Everyone has their own dynamic that they prefer, which is all fine. *g*

I can get behind that. So far I've only read dom!Sherlock/sub!John stories, because I'm very nitpicky when it comes to my Sherlock fanfic, but I'd certainl be willing to read the latter as well. Both dynamics make sense in a way, I believe. But as you say; each to their own. :]

I find with velvet maces stories that i am full of trepidation going into them as i know they will be angsty as all hell, but that is always counterbalanced with the sheer fabulousness of writing and plot, plus, omg can she do a bdsm fic and a half. Excellent rec.

This is probably the lightest thing of velvet_mace's that I've read. Sounds silly, but the rest of her stuff is so deliciously dark and this feels sort of hopeful to me. I'm glad you like this one too; I was rather hesitant to rec it, not because I don't think it's extremely well-written, but because I know BDSM-themes aren't always well received.
