Angel in the Snow by Nicky Gabriel (Gen)

It's Christmas in August as the first catalogs come in the mail, and my red-and-white Toyota Tercel bypasses yet another gas station to bring you another fine piece of Starsky and Hutch fiction.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky, Hutch
Length: 6,314 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nickygabriel
Author Website: Nicky Gabriel on the Starsky Hutch Archive

Why this must be read:

Nicky Gabriel is a writer whose work is complex and unique. A native of Poland, she writes in Polish then translates her stories into English. It's hard enough for me to find the right words in my own language, so I am awed by anyone who attempts to write about another culture (American) in another time (1970s) in a language not their own. I'm an unabashed fan of her work, finding it touching and beautiful and very very different. You may find phrasing that is not idiomatically correct, but look past that; it's a minor issue. Because her stories are about human emotion and the human heart, and all the different ways humans find to define and express love. These significant themes shine through issues of language and culture, bringing a diversity of views on love to our fandom that are worth exploring.

In Angel in the Snow, Starsky has been back on the force for 6 months after Gunther's hit. Yet, he and Hutch are still sharing Hutch's apartment, as they have for a year and a half as Starsky recuperated. It's almost Christmas. The season brings up family expectations when Starsky learns his mom won't be visiting this year. Refreshingly, the story diverges from fanon where, typically, Starsky's mom is idealized and Hutch's dad is cold and ambitious. Instead, Starsky and his mom have conflicts because she didn't want him to go back to police work, and because he's still not married. Like many parents, she feels that's the only way he'll find happiness.

Hutch's grandmother is dying, so he must go to Minnesota alone. When Starsky assures him that "some time apart might be good for us," Hutch thinks Starsky's ready to move out.

It's a relief to read a story where Hutch's father is not an ogre. Instead, he is an insightful man who understands his son, and seems to understand Hutch's relationship with Starsky better than he does. Hutch's parents have been divorced twenty years. What his father really understands is loneliness. He doesn't want that for Hutch.

Hutch wants to find the strength to let Starsky know that if he's ready to move out, Hutch won't stand in his way. The story explores issues surrounding adult relationships that are not typical, especially in fanfiction. But really, that's just a fancy way of saying that, like all Nicky's stories, this one's about love.
