"They Dream of Dancing" by Ride Forever: Mature
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 1118 Tanka Poem
Author on LJ: http://ride-4ever.livejournal.com/
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/Ride_Forever/pseuds/Ride_Forever
Why this must be read: "They Dream of Dancing" is one of the first poems I read in the fandom, and stands out as one of the most accomplished from a purely literary standpoint. Ride is the mistress of verbal economy, and it really shows. As well as the technical accomplishment she achieves in the restrictive tanka form, and her use of offbeat rhythms and alliteration, including incantations in Inuktitut, it is also poignant, witty, and extremely erotic. Fraser in a silk kimono wielding a sword, a 'Ray seeking missile,' the two men boxing (again in silk... yet it still manages to be at times laugh out loud funny. How Ride achieves all this just over eleven hundred words is beyond me. Gorgeous.
