Why this must be read: I loved this story, because of its positive portrayals of both Rays... but particularly Ray Vecchio (who doesn't like it when people break Fraser's heart... if that is, indeed, what happened.)
It's refreshing to see a story in which Ray Vecchio's friendship for Fraser is so solidly portrayed. In canon Ray is the kind of friend who gets out of his hospital bed and goes to another country to help a friend. This story picks up on that selflessness, and Ray goes all the way from Florida by way of Chicago to Inuktitut and back to Chicago again for the latest round of 'fix the Mountie.'
This story has several of my very favourite things... cluelessness on the part of Fraser and RayK (do those men ever actually TALK to each other, or just boff like little bunnies? Nothing against boffing, but try talking about your feelings once in a while, okay?) A sympathetic RayV, who thank goodness, is not portrayed with the kneejerk 'all Italians and all Catholics are homophobes.' (He makes one homophobic comment, but that's more because he's squicked Fraser's with Kowalski than anything else.) And it has a lovely redemptive arc, and a happy ending. (I can tell you that, because the author mentions it in her tags). I also love the fact that in this story RayV is happy with Stella, who I really like in this. Though her 'screen time' is limited it's lovely to know he has 'the most beautiful woman in the world' to go back home to. And Francesca is fantastic! She just cut through the macho posturing crap like a hot knife through butter. As RayV thinks to himself, she's grown up. (Being pregnant will do that to you.)
What else? Ah yes... a word about the structure. The story does start with 'part two', RayV pov, and he's pretty bummed at Kowalski. 'Part one' in the middle flashes back to the 'start' of the story, from the RayK pov, in which angst and heartbreak and miscommunication abound. 'Part Three' returns to Vecchio's pov. Fraser is seen only through the eyes of the two Rays, and it would be a shatteringly sad portrayal, if it weren't for the fact that RayV won't let him be an ass.
I love the fact that Vecchio is prepared to put his prejudice against Kowalski aside, and see what Fraser really needs, and that he's prepared to do anything to help his friend... even if Benny is the most irritating man in the world. A story which had me smiling all over.
One word of caution though... I've seen this rated as PG 13. I would probably have rated it a little higher, because of the sex scene in part two. This isn't a complaint. I'm a big fan of sex. But I just thought you should know.
