Why this must be read:
These interlapping and interwoven series are a must read for anyone with an interest in Sci-Fi and AI in modern culture. The author's exploration of what exactly Jarvis means/is in the grand scheme of things is ... well, it's a Vast and Shaking Thing. Bruce coming to grips with what exactly Tony has created and how he fits into their lives is beautiful and seamless.
Then, there's an attack against Tony wherein Dummy gets hurt and Clint Barton comes face to face with what he's living with and he has to come to terms with it. Enter Nick Fury and Jarvis in a one-on-one and the whole series is just so damn meaty and good and amazingly well-characterized, it's *haunting*. I've read each and every fic of these series *multiple* times and I always walk away with something else.
Excerpt from Vast and Shaking Things
"You realise your AI is somewhat ... temperamental?" Bruce asked him, once. Mildly, glancing sideways at Tony across the lab. With a small smile that said, yes, he did realise he was the one asking this, thanks, pots and kettles, he got it, but. Tony grinned at him.
"Nah," he said, waving a hand dismissively. "He's not. He's just not being shy any more, is all." He let his smile soften, a bit. "Actually, I'd take it as a compliment. It means he's starting to trust you."
Bruce raised a vaguely incredulous eyebrow. "Your AI letting me know that he verbally abuses you, in the politest and most tasteful of ways, means he trusts me?"
"I wouldn't call it abuse, sir," JARVIS interrupted, casually. With that echo in the back of his electronic voice that meant he was amused. Tony loved that. He was the best, he so was. His AI could be amused.
"I would," Tony shot back. "You know all those times I told people I couldn't hang out because I had an abusive boyfriend? That was all you, baby."
"But you love me anyway, sir," JARVIS said, deliberately inflectionless. "And you'll always come back to me, won't you." Slow and echoing and menacing, because what did Tony tell you? JARVIS had the most suspect sense of humour ever.
And wasn't it awesome?
Excerpt from Silver Linings
“They shot Dummy,” Stark answered, cold and remote, the assembly arms settling deliberately behind him under JARVIS’ control. “They came here, and they hurt my people, they assaulted my home, they put you guys in danger, and they shot Dummy.” He shook his head, free hand clenching into a fist. “I don’t give a fuck what happened to them. They earned it.”
“They also threatened you, sir,” JARVIS murmured, his voice as cool and even-tempered as always. “They meant to remove you, I believe. This was meant to be an extraction.”
And that, the AI seemed to say, the mechanical, tool-laden arms of his physical extension lax and calm around Tony’s crouched figure, would not be permitted. Not now. Not ever again.
“Ri-ight,” Clint murmured. His voice dropping automatically, and stupidly, into the calm-the-crazy-person tone that he hated when someone pointed it at him, or Natasha. Or Phil. Or, fuck, any of them. Anyone who had to look at the things they looked at, and do the things they did, and find some fucking way of coping with it at the end of the day. Clint heard his voice drop into that register and, suddenly, he wanted to slap himself.
Tony smiled, instead. Casual, blank, the I’m-an-eccentric-billionaire, I-don’t-care-what-you-think grin that masked … oh, so many things. They were, all of them, far too intimately acquainted with that fucking smile.
