The Avengers (movieverse) / Supernatural (Mature)

Why this must be read: Clint Barton tries to make a deal with a crossroads demon to wipe his ledger clean after the Helicarrier attack. However, they'll only let him reclaim one lost soul in exchange for giving up his own soul ten years down the line. Unfortunately, being an Avenger is dangerous work and Clint doesn't get those 10 years.

With a little help, Natasha and Phil set about trying to bring Clint back from Hell. Part of what I love about this story is how the three characters are devoted to one another. I also liked the journey through Hell, how vivid and terrifying it is, reinforcing how much you have to care about someone to be willing to risk everything for them. It's a story of friendship and love, and well worth reading.

(The Mature rating on this story is more for violence and the disturbing nature of Hell than anything sexual.)

"None of what happened was your fault," Coulson said again, softening his voice.

Clint shrugged. "I still did it. On me to fix it." He looked up at Coulson, the satisfied glint back in his eye. "You'd have hated the funeral. Fury made a big thing of it, you know how he is. At least that's what Nat told me, I didn't go. Figured I'd be the last person anyone would want to see."

Coulson watched him for a long time. There was still dirt under his nails. "How long did they give you?"

Clint shrugged again. "Ten years. Seems like their standard deal. Assuming I live that long, obviously."

Coulson nodded, already lining up in his head SHIELD contacts who might be knowledgeable in this area. "At least that gives us some time to get you out of it."

"I tried to bring everyone back," he said, staring off into the distance. "I did. She told me my soul wasn't worth that much and I guess I can't argue. Had to be a fair trade, one for one."

Coulson felt like all the air had gone out of the room. "Why me?"

Clint gave him that oh, come on, look again. "You know the answer to that one, too."

Just wanted to say you've been hitting so many of my favorites, and now added to them. thanks! (I'd somehow missed the sabinelagrande fic, and this one I'd read before but lost track of, so it was almost like NEW FIC!) -- which doesn't surprise me, that you rec fic I love to read since you write fic I love to read, in various fandoms. :-)
