Why this must be read:
Sherlock Holmes is a patient in a closed psychiatric ward. John Watson is his new psychiatrist.
An alternate timeline fic where consulting-detective Sherlock is in a psychiatric ward, experiencing bouts of psychosis. John Watson is the former army-doctor who Mycroft hires on staff at the ward to keep an eye on Sherlock.
Sherlock, trapped at the ward, is still the difficult genius he can’t help being. But he seems a little more human in a situation where he is brought down with his weaknesses (the psychosis) so apparent and debilitating to his work. John starts out the reluctant wounded soldier, but he finds his footing quickly enough as he deals with Sherlock and tries to find ways to help him. It's like canon took a little step to the left of where they actually started.
