Voulez-Vous by AlbaNix (G)

Fandom: SHERLOCK
Pairing: Gen
Length: 5517

Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:
It’s an ordinary day at 221B apart from the fact that Sherlock is speaking in French. What John doesn’t know is that Sherlock has an ulterior motive. What Sherlock doesn’t know is that while John may not speak French, he’s almost fluent in Sherlock.

This fic previously had another part (Sherlock speaking Italian), but it was reposted without it. Hopefully, that will be coming back soon.

An exercise in linguistic and relationship goodness. Sherlock spends almost the entire fic speaking in French. (translations provided) It starts because Sherlock is bored and wants to conduct an experiment, then suddenly strikes on the idea to reveal his innermost thoughts and confessions with John none the wiser. Only John knows Sherlock too well and starts to understand what Sherlock is saying, despite not knowing French. Enter Mycroft to witness the interplay and be baffled.

On one hand, it’s a fun exercise in language. French may seem familiar enough for English speakers, even ones who don’t understand a lick of French. (Linguistic influences and all) On the other hand, this fic really illustrates a version of the relationship between Sherlock and John- how well they know each other for John to simply understand Sherlock instead of the words spoken.

The wayback version doesn't have the translations, so I was using babelfish (http://translation.babylon.com/italian/to-english/) to translate as I went. Totally worth is to see it translate "Noioso" as "adj. boring, dull, tedious, tiresome, slow, prosy, humdrum, stodgy; annoying, troublesome" so I could imagine Sherlock actually listing off all of those adjectives.

This link is broken, and I my google-fu has failed. Do you know if it can be found anywhere else?
