Why this must be read:
It's more and more difficult lately for me to find that hot fic that scratches my own specific itch. (What, you thought I was in it for the literature?) I yearn for that moment that brings me into the story, helps me experience it from inside the characters, and, most importantly, makes me BELIEVE that the two guys I watch in Starsky and Hutch are actually capable of this kind of behavior. When I find that fic, I'm a happy camper. It's no surprise that Nyssa, one of my favorite authors, gave me just what I was looking for. In The Deal, instead of the sexual payoff I thought I wanted, Nyssa gave me something I didn't realize I was really looking for--an emotional payoff. Which gives this story both the depth and the believability that makes it ring so true.
In the show, Hutch often chides Starsky on his baser nature, asking him more than once, "Is that all you ever think about?" Riffing on that, Starsky asks Hutch during another boring stakeout, "What do you think about when you jerk off?" Hutch tries unsuccessfully to deflect the conversation, so instead, Hutch turns the topic back on him, and asks Starsky what he thinks about.
Starsky is happy to respond; when he's jerking off he thinks about Hutch's mouth. And that quickly we're introduced to the sexual relationship the boys are in. Hutch likes giving head to men; Starsky likes getting head. But Hutch won't accept any reciprocation from Starsky, because, he says, Starsky's not gay. That's the deal. But they're partners, a relationship that means more to Starsky. So it isn't long before he's pushing for more. Their emotional closeness—demonstrated throughout the story—has been there for years. And because it is, Starsky can't help worrying about Hutch's happiness, and what Hutch might be giving up by settling for this limited sexual relationship. While Hutch is worried that getting even more involved with Starsky would be way too dangerous—for his heart. Rich with the tight, clever writing Nyssa is known for, and the kind of snappy, funny dialog that rings true to the ear, this Deal has just the right payoff.
