Fandom Overview: Cabin Pressure, Series Four

Cabin Pressure Overview

Hi there! I'm [livejournal.com profile] lei_che_sogna, or Susie for short, and I'm going to be reccing BBC Radio Four's Cabin Pressure this month! I'm really excited to share some of my favourite fics for what has to be the best radio programme ever. Brilliant! Back in 2011, [livejournal.com profile] ktbean did a really excellent Fandom Overview which you can read here, but since then there's been another series of the programme. To get you caught up, here are the latest developments:

Flight crew:

It's the fearless Captain Martin Crieff (Benedict Cumberbatch) who's had the most character stuff going on this series. We've been introduced to his family in 'Wokingham,' and the week before in 'Vaduz,' he managed to score a date with Princess Theresa of Liechtenstein. Since this is Martin, he asks her to go to Duxford Air Museum with him, but it actually works. By the end of the series, the two have been on several more dates, and things seem to be proceeding nicely. This is quite a turnaround for a man who has basically the worst luck in the universe, but at the end of the series he has a truly terrible decision to make, so his luck doesn't last for long.

First Officer Douglas Richardson (Roger Allam) has a bit less to do this series, but manages to get in an episode-long battle of Words of One Syllable with Carolyn, and has several snappy put-downs each episode. He's still just as good with solving problems: in 'Xinzhou,' he uses his wits, a snowman, and Martin's hat to save the day night. This is just as well, as earlier in the episode he stole Martin's travel iron and used it to fry himself a bacon butty.

MJN Air CEO Carolyn Knapp-Shappey's (Stephanie Cole) relationship with Herc Shipwright is proceeding apace; he proclaims "I love you," to her, and she tells him he isn't a Disney toy. She does love him in her own way, since in 'Uskerty' she goes to great lengths to purchase a dead stuffed sheep (named Finn McCool the Third) as a birthday present for him, knowing full well that Herc loathes sheep.

Steward Arthur Shappey (John Finnemore) is... still doing Arthur-y things, which include ordering baby food instead of proper meals, giving the best airport address of all time (Which begins, "Ladies and gentlemen, can I have your attention please. This is the Airport speaking. Listen to the Airport."), discovering an allergy to dragonfruit at an inopportune moment, and adding valuable embellishment to a game of Fizz buzz by suggesting they say "Have a banana" instead of doing the "complicated numbers thing."

Minor Characters From Series Four Who Are Likely to Crop Up in Fic:

Captain Hercules Shipwright (Anthony Head) of Air Caledonia is back for a few more episodes! He still has a lovely smooth voice, and is still interested in Carolyn despite her prickliness, going so far as to pseudo-propose to her. He isn't going to work for Air Caledonia for much longer, though, as it's being bought out by Swiss Airways. He doesn't know whether he should stay in the UK for Carolyn, or move to Zurich and take the Swiss Airways job.

As mentioned earlier, we're introduced to Princess Theresa of Liechtenstein (Matilda Ziegler) and her little brother,

King Maximilian (or 'Maxi') of Liechtenstein (Kieran Hodgson) when Princess Theresa decides to charter an MJN flight to take Maxie back to school in England. Princess Theresa is amazingly cool, protecting Martin from Carolyn's wrath, and also has a great sense of humour. She also loves airplanes and all aspects of aviation, which is why she's quite happy to go to Duxford Air Museum and Croydon Airport Visitor's Centre with Martin. Maxi is a spoilt brat, and even manages to annoy Arthur by playing Yellow Car incorrectly.

Martin's mum Wendy Crieff (Prunella Scales) has some heart problems, which means we get to meet her and both of Martin's siblings. Her mission in life is to be "no trouble," which means she is very poor at receuperating from illness without interfering. Luckily Carolyn has the bright idea of sending Arthur to care for her, and it all works out well from there. Wendy has a bit of a blind spot where Martin's older brother Simon is concerned, often saying that they should do "what Simon thinks best," regardless of how stupid a suggestion it might be.

Caitlin Crieff (Rosie Cavaliero) is Martin's sister and a traffic warden. This is mostly so that the doctor in the hospital can mistake she and Martin for having just come from a costume party.

Simon Crieff (Justin Edwards) works for the local council as an administrator. He has a giant moustache and an even more giant ego, and delights in undercutting and infantilising Martin at every opportunity. The MJN Air crew band together to flatter Martin in front of Simon, marking the first time Martin has ever bested his older brother.

In the final episode of the series, 'Yverdon-Les-Bains,' Martin applies to be a pilot at Swiss Airways. Although it's revealed that he only got the interview because he got such a high score on the technical exam Swiss Airways assumed he cheated, Martin grows a spine and manages to land himself a job. The problem is that, since Carolyn can only afford to pay one pilot, the likelihood of finding another one to work for free (like Martin does) is extremely unlikely. If Martin goes, MJN will very probably be out of business soon after. As the episode closes, Martin can't quite face revealing the truth to the rest of the crew, who by this point are very much like his family and want him to succeed. He just doesn't want his success to mean that MJN fails.

Word of God is that 'Yverdon' isn't the last episode, but exactly when the final 'Z' episode will air hasn't been announced.

Excellent! It's such a wonderful radio show, I'm so glad to see it getting attention here. Looking forward to recs!

(PS: "He just doesn't his success to mean that MJN fails." I think you're missing a "want" in there.)

This has me interested in listening to it! Any idea how long the entire series is?

Hey, can you check the link you've put up for "Cabin Pressure Fans" (yes, I'm angling for transcripts) the site that's linked (for me anyway) is not a fansite. It's going to http://caityweaver.kinja.com/

Cabin Pressure is awesome! I listened on the advice of a fellow fangeek and then purchased a copy for the library at which I worked.

Wonderful update, thank you! Looking forward to your CP recs, such an under appreciated [in fandom, anyway] show.
