Why this must be read:
Thank you for flying the friendly skies with me this month! My last rec is a fic about the dates Theresa and Martin go on, beginning with Duxford and ending with somewhere a little less prosaic. I love this fic because you can see how the two of them will work as a couple, and why they're perfect for each other. And there's a cameo from some real-life royalty as well!

Why this must be read:
For my last two recs, I'm looking at the future of the programme. In Series Four the character of Princess Theresa of Liechtenstein was introduced, and became (among other things) a canonical love interest for Martin. Since it's het and a new ship, there isn't a massive amount of fic about the couple yet, but this fic is absolutely one of the best. It's only natural that fanfic authors take it upon themselves to resolve the painful cliffhanger at the end of the series, and branwyn comes up with an answer that's eminently satisfying, along with some really sweet dialogue.

Why this must be read: While it's canon that Martin lives in the attic of a student house, we never find out very much about the students themselves. This fic, written as a much-appended list of rules for living with Martin, gives us some insight. Not about any one person, but there's this sense of a group of well-meaning people in the background of Martin's life, quietly helping him out while doing their best to keep him in the dark about it. By turns funny and angsty, this is a fic to definitely read.

Why this must be read: If I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it still for three hours while I fetch a pencil?
There are many Cabin Pressure fics out there in which Martin does many different things to earn money so he can, well, survive. Being a nude model for a life drawing class, as he is in this fic, isn't the most out there but it certainly is entertaining. This story delves into Martin's deep-seated issues with his self-esteem, and there's also "a big Twigletty orgy," which is not as terrible as the thing that you are probably thinking.

Length: 3449

Why this must be read: Using the 'baked potato' scene in Series 3 premiere 'Qikiqtarjuaq' as a jumping-off point, in this canon AU we find that Martin isn't asking Carolyn to be paid for himself, but so he can support his son Daniel. Normally kidfic isn't really my thing, but this is really, really good. Basingstoke makes you believe that Martin could have a child, and he could be a genius (but not in the normal, sometimes-annoying kidfic way). And when you read about their relationship, you want to give them both smooshes and hope their lives go really well.

Why this must be viewed: Being a radio series, it's quite difficult to find fanvids for Cabin Pressure. And when you do find some, they tend to mostly be kinetic typography or clips from Sherlock. There's nothing wrong with either of those, of course, but you do long for something different. In the same style as that Nikon ad, this vid contains loads of not-meaningful-unless-you've-heard-the-programme references to give you the warm fuzzy feeling that Cabin Pressure fandom has, and has even been seen by John Finnemore (writer/creator of the programme), who complimented it!

Why this must be read: 'Bordeaux' is a lovely long fic, and definitely one of the best Martin/Douglas relationship-building stories out there. It starts slow with some quiet character moments, and ends with lots of smut, which you'll know is something you want to read or not. Probably you will, when it's this hot.

Why this must be read: This is a story about how, at the age of six, Martin stopped wanting to be an aeroplane and started wanting to be a pilot. In Cabin Pressure, you get the sense that Martin never really had the happiest life, and the peek you see here of his childhood is quite sad and lonely. Luckily, an unexpected visit from the Doctor turns things around. This is a story to read on grey days; by the end, you just feel cheered up and cozy. And, as a bonus, it has a piece of really lovely fanart by artbylexie.

Why this must be read: Anything inspired by this picture of Benedict Cumberbatch can't possibly be bad, and lamardeuse delivers a well-written romantic tale with some angst. In this fic, the photo is actually of Martin, and Douglas sees it quite by accident. Because it's such an inspiring picture, Douglas soon finds himself re-evaluating how he feels about Martin. We also get some of Arthur's hilarious musings, Martin standing up to Carolyn (with Douglas' help), and a happy ending.

Why this must be read: Cabin Pressure is a comedy programme, so due to Law of Fanfic there's loads of darkfic about tragedy befalling GERTI and some or all of her crew perishing tragically. Not in this shortish and fairly adorable story, though, in which the crew do rather better in real life than they did on that Safety & Emergency Procedures course in 'Ipswich'.

Why this must be read: It's pretty much inevitable in any fandom (but especially one as small as Cabin Pressure) that you'll find one author who is your favourite, and branwyn is mine. I think it's because zhe writes such excellent character voices, which is so important in AU fic. 'All the Hollows Deep' was written for a prompt asking for Martin as a hunter (a bit like the Winchesters), but this isn't a crossover. It's a short but well-crafted supernatural AU with some rather terrifying moments. It begins when Martin notices something not quite right about Arthur...

Cabin Pressure Overview

Hi there! I'm [livejournal.com profile] lei_che_sogna, or Susie for short, and I'm going to be reccing BBC Radio Four's Cabin Pressure this month! I'm really excited to share some of my favourite fics for what has to be the best radio programme ever. Brilliant! Back in 2011, [livejournal.com profile] ktbean did a really excellent Fandom Overview which you can read here, but since then there's been another series of the programme. To get you caught up, here are the latest developments:

Spoilers for Series Four below the cut! )
If you haven't listened to Cabin Pressure before, you should give it a try! Even if you don't like radio programmes or podcasts much, it's still worth a listen. You can buy it from Amazon, Audiogo, Audible, and lots of other places that begin with a letter other than 'A'.

Summary: Mixed up luggage and an undeclared exotic pet present a mystery even Douglas can't solve. Enter Sherlock Holmes.”

Why this must be read: A great example of a popular crossover. This crossover combo is popular thanks to a certain actor playing the leads in both series, although the characters are polar opposites in charisma, intellect and self- esteem. This fic exploits that contrast for comedy casefic value: Sherlock is on the case of an undeclared passenger on MJN Air, will this solve or worsen Cptn. Crieffs troubles?  Helps if you’ve heard the Cabin Pressure shows, to appreciate just how well the authors write in the audio drama screenplay format, capturing each characters voice and social quirks perfectly.  Holmes fans unfamiliar with the Cabin Pressure series can still enjoy it though, as casefic with a novel format and plot detours [especially if you have a peek at the CP fandom overview first!].  The deft use of banter is the best part of this fic imo, teasing out relationship dynamics between the two worlds in a way that highlights why each is so likable.

Excerpt: ARTHUR [speaking over Douglas]: Martin, there's this BRILLIANT chap; he solves mysteries and chases bad guys and all sorts of things…Oh! you should read his blog. This chap—He could help you!

Title: Planes and Pirates by Sketchbookpianist
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes & Martin Crief
Length: 657 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: FF.net
Why this must be read:

To be honest, I haven't found very many Sherlock cross-overs I like and most of them have been rec'd on Crack Van already. But this little fic is kind of adorable.

Cabin Pressure is a hilarious BBC radio comedy. You can find some episodes on youtube. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Martin Crief, who couldn't be more different from Sherlock. The magic of radio is that they don't look alike either. Martin is short, ginger, ernest, and not all that bright.

Until he ws six, Martin wanted to grow up to be an airplane. Once he learned the impossibility of that he dreamed of being a pilot. According to his brother Mycroft, Sherlock wanted to be a pirate. In "Planes and Pirates" the nine-year-old cousins share a moment of connection but stay recognizably themselves. Extra credit for the Dr. Who shout-out:-). It's too short for an excerpt so just go read and enjoy :-)

Why this must be read:
I don't know how many folks will give a rare, crossover pairing a shot, but I really like both of these characters, and putting post-Reichenbach Lestrade into Martin's world works surprisingly well. It's a story of healing, so there's some angst.

Warnings: Post TRF. Assumes knowledge of S2. Alchohol use, references to domestic violence (but not between the men in the pairing).

Why this vid kicks ass:

There is actually a Cabin Pressure fanvid! Since this is a radio show, the thought was that there weren't going to be any and I was just going to link to the series on youtube. On an off chance I plugged "cabin pressure fanvid" into google and this brilliance is what came up.

Tarnamackle has perfectly synced the brilliant "How Many Otters" talk from Ottery St Mary to clips from Sherlock. With Douglas as Mycroft, Sherlock as Martin and John as Arthur, Tarnamackle has added a whole other dimension to an already hilarious exchange.

Length: 10 448

Why this must be read:

There are a lot of crossovers between Cabin Pressure and Sherlock. Seriously. Go check out AO3. Out of 207 works, 20 of them are in someway crossed with Sherlock.
If my maths is correct, that means at least 9% of AO3 Cabin Pressure has Sherlock elements. The main reason for this is probably Benedict Cumberbatch as he stars in both shows. How can you not write a doppelganger smut fic when faced with the pretty?

[livejournal.com profile] cabinpres_fic has turned out some truly impressive fic. This is probably one of my favourites. And judging by the rankings, it's a favourite on AO3 as well.

[livejournal.com profile] prettybirdy979 has written an awesome take on what being a brother to Sherlock Holmes would be like. Starting in childhood and running right up to current time, her characters are perfectly voiced for their canon and yet seamlessly mixed together to form a fantastic brand new world.

Excerpt:

Sherlock is eight years old when he meets his almost four year old half-brother, Martin Crieff. Martin is ginger haired, has the same blue grey eyes as Sherlock does and upon seeing Sherlock, hides behind his mother’s leg. Sherlock is standing by his father, his hand being held to stop him running off. He doesn’t understand why he has to be here, there’s a far more interesting dead bird under his bed than the scared child before him.

Fandom: CABIN PRESSURE
Pairing: Martin/OMC
Length: 2 675

Why this must be read:
Martin is so very awkward. If there's a way to mess up he'll find it. It's kind of endearing though.

I love this one because you can just see Martin saying and being so very, very awkward.

Written for a prompt on the kink meme, Warsaw, has a terribly awkward Martin, an awkwardness translator Douglas, and a happy, happy ending.

Excerpt:

Once seen, it could not be unseen: Captain Crieff, mid-snog. Juicy, wet, arse-groping snog.

Douglas cleared his throat, then cleared it again, louder, when the young couple failed to notice. Martin looked up and instantly blushed a brilliant red. He shoved the other man away from him slightly.

"Hey! Private property," the other man said. He kept his arms around Martin.

"I did knock. The door opened of its own volition."

"It's Douglas, from work, come to collect me, I'd better--" Martin extricated himself from his lover's arms and hurried toward Douglas.

"Hat, Martin," Douglas said, rather enjoying himself. Martin clapped his hands to his head.

"Here, baby. Have a good flight." The man picked Martin's captaining hat up from the table behind him and set it on Martin's head with a kiss to his nose. Ah, young love. Sickening. "And I'm Tom," he said to Douglas. "Nice to finally meet you."

"Astounding to find you exist," Douglas said. "Come along, Captain, your chariot is double parked."

Why this must be read:

I'm going to start my Cabin Pressure recs for this month with one of my all time favourites. Actually, scratch that. What I mean to say is...  This is the best Cabin Pressure fic out there!

Every time I read it I get all gooey feeling from the pure amount of smoop contained within. You have been warned. T
his is such a sweetly happy fic. You may want to book a dentist appointment after reading it. Your teeth are going to be rotted right through.

Counter, Original, Spare, Strange, or Happy Boyfriends as its known in my bookmarks, is the final part of the Happy Martin Trilogy by [livejournal.com profile] innie_darling. If you're ever having a bad day read the whole trilogy. You'll be smiling for hours afterwards.

It's kind of a tradition in the Cabin Pressure fandom to give Martin happy endings. And I'm pleased to say that [livejournal.com profile] innie_darling has succeeded beyond anybody's wildest dreams.

Excerpt:

"I like that you can wear my socks," David said, stretching out his much longer legs.

"You like that I have big feet?" Martin asked disbelievingly. David persisted in seeing the good in everything about him, and he was curious to hear the rationale behind this one.

"Well, you know what they say about men with big feet," David said suggestively.

Martin was too full just then to respond to innuendo. "That they wear big shoes?"

"Yes, exactly; you're a genius," David said, giggling a little and trying to stifle the sound by hiding his face in Martin's neck. "Take me to bed, you loon."
