Main Characters

One Hobbit and Thirteen Dwarves

(official images of cast and crew organized and presented by kumama-d4naf5n)

(in order of the picture above, top left to right)

Bilbo Baggins - the Hobbit, is the modest hero of the story, shorter than Dwarves and much shorter than Men or Elves or Wizards. He rises to the challenges with which he is confronted, and rescues the Dwarves several times, from others and themselves. In the course of this book, he finds the Ring which will lead to the story of the Lord of the Rings. He is the point of view character in the book, and very frequently in fanfiction.
Played by Martin Freeman, who also plays Watson in the BBC Sherlock series.
Fanon: he is often portrayed as lonely and bullied in his community, timid and shyly adoring of Thorin

Thorin Oakenshield - King-in-Exile of the Dwarves of Erebor, hero of the battle of Azanulbizar, proud leader of the quest to reclaim his kingdom from the dragon Smaug. Spoiler: (skip) Thorin dies in the final battle of the The Hobbit (which will be in the film There and Back Again).

Played by Richard Armitage, who also appeared in the BBC series Robin Hood and Spooks (AKA MI5)
Fanon of Thorin is that he is a brooding romantic hero, of the Heathcliff variety. He mostly paired with Bilbo, next most frequently with Dwalin, then Fili and/or Kili (intergenerational incest, if you're squicked always check the pairing)

Oin - a healer who, hard of hearing, played by James Callen

Gloin - father of Gimli who will be one of the Fellowship in the LOTR series, played by Peter Hambleton

Dori - An older Dwarf with elegant braids, brother of Nori and Ori (the Brothers Ri, common mining folk)
played by Mark Hadlow
Fanon: he's very fussy, overprotective of Ori

Nori - a rogue and thief who comes on the quest looking for gold (and beer)
played by Jed Brophy, who played Orcs and other minor characters in the LOTR films
Fanon: often paired with Dwalin

Ori - a timid relatively young Dwarf, a scribe whose main weapon is a slingshot.
Spoiler:
skip) Ori survives the events of the Hobbit but later dies in the kingdom of Moria, his remains are found in the Lord of the Rings
Played by Adam Brown

Balin - senior advisor to Thorin, brother of Dwalin
Spoiler:
skip) Balin survives the events of the Hobbit but later dies in the kingdom of Moria, his remains are found in the Lord of the Ringsplayed by Ken Stott

Dwalin - Thorin's loyal retainer, the tallest Dwarf and a fierce warrior.
Played by Graham McTavish
Fanon: most often paired with Thorin, Nori or Ori

Bifur - a toy-maker. In the movie-verse, he has an orc axe stuck in his skull and can only speak with hand gestures or the dwarvish language Khuzdul. Brother of Bofur and Bombur (the Brothers Ur)
Played by William Kircher

Bombur - cook and most rotund of dwarves
Played by Stephen Hunter

Bofur - a miner; in the movie-verse, he is the most sympathetic to Bilbo, and quite the joker.
Played by James Nesbitt

Fili (also spelled Fílí)- Thorin's nephew and heir, one of the "hot" dwarves. Spoiler: (skip) Fili dies in the final battle of the The Hobbit (which will be in the film There and Back Again).

Played by Dean O'Gorman, a New Zealand actor who also appears in The Almighty Johnsons
Fanon: he's most frequently paired with his brother (so sibling incest, always check the pairings), often portrayed as the brother who is more formal, even repressed.

Kili (Kílí) - Thorin's nephew, the youngest of the company, and the only archer, he has a notably short beard and is considered a "hot" dwarf. Spoiler: (
skip) Kili dies in the final battle of the The Hobbit (which will be in the film There and Back Again)
Played by Aidan Turner, who also appeared in Being Human
Fanon: paired with Fili and/or Thorin (incest), Tharanduil, Tauriel. He is frequently written as an angsty rebellious teenager who is bullied for looking like an elf and/or a cheerful mischief-maker, and is often the one tortured or otherwise wumped on.

Wizards, Elves, and more

Gandalf the Grey - a Wizard, a particular friend of Hobbits, Elves, Rangers and Eagles, who recruits Bilbo for the quest to kill the dragon and return the Dwarves to their rightful home, the mountain of Erebor.
Played by Ian McKellen, who also played him in the Lord of the Rings films.

Radagast - an eccentric wizard, the character does not appear in the Hobbit book, but in the first movie (AUJ), he dodders around with his pet hedgehog, discovers a dangerous sword, investigates a dangerous castle, and distracts orcs in his sledge pulled by magic rabbits.
Played by Sylvester McCoy, who also played the Seventh Doctor in Doctor Who

Elrond - Lord of the Elves in Rivendell, member of the White Council (the good guys), he helps the Dwarves decode a map to a secret door.
Played by Hugo Weaving who played him in the LOTR films

Lindir - An Elf of Rivendell
Played by Bret Mackenzie, who also appears in LOTR and Flight of the Chonchords
Fanon: it's complicated (see fanlore.org for figwit)

Galadriel - Lady of Lorien, ancient and powerful Elf, member of the White Council, she does not appear in the book but does in the movie (AUJ at least)
Played by Cate Blanchett, who played her in the LOTR films

Saruman - Head Wizard of the White Council, appears in the movies but not in the book.
SPOILER: he has already been lured by the evil Sauron by the time of the Hobbit, and will attempt to conquer the world in LOTR.
Played by Christopher Lee, who has also appeared in many hundred films and who played him in the LOTR films

Beorn - A giant shape-changer, friend of Gandalf. Spoiler: (skip) Beorn harbors the Dwarves (in the second movie) and fights with them in the Battle of Five Armies (third movie).

Played by Mikael Persbrandt

Thranduil - Elf, King of the Woodland Realm, now surrounded by the dangerous forest Mirkwood. The first movie (AUJ) portrays him as abandoning the Dwarves when the dragon attacks. Spoiler: (skip) Thranduil imprisons the Dwarves (in the second movie) and fights as an ally in the third movie..
Played by Lee Pace who has also appeared in Pushing Daisies
Fandom has been anticipating the second movie by writing Thorin/Thranduil hatesex and various Thranduil/Dwarf dubcon

Tauriel - an invention of the filmmakers, she is an Elf captain in Tharanduil's service
Played by Evangeline Lilly who has also appeared in LOST
Fandom is a bit divided as she's a) female and b) invented, so there are fears of Mary-Sue-ishness, but there are stories which pair her with Kili or Legolas

Legolas - Thranduil's son, he is one of the Fellowship in LOTR
Played by Orlando Bloom, who also played him in the LOTR films and Pirates of the Carribbean
Fanon tends to pair him with Kili, as they are both archers, and Aragorn in LOTR

Bard - an archer of Laketown
Played by Luke Evans, who appeared in Fast & Furious 6 and The Three Musketeers

Gollum - the creature which carried the Ring for hundreds of years before Bilbo finds it
Played by Andy Serkis who also played him in the Lord of the Rings

Azog - Orc chieftain, in bookverse he was killed by Thorin, and his son Bolg seeks revenge; in movieverse he loses a hand and becomes the leader of the Orcs and Goblins chasing Thorin.
Played by Manu Bennett

Smaug (pronounced Smau-g rather than Smog) - the Dragon that captured Erebor
Played by Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock to Martin Freeman's Watson in BBC Sherlock.
Fanon: this fan favorite pairing has led to Bilbo/Smaug fic.

The Necromancer - a terrible power, only mentioned in the book but more active in the movies. SPOILER: actually the evil Sauron, risen again
Played by Benedict Cumberbatch

Hobbit Overview

Bilbo (a Hobbit) lives quietly in The Shire (much like 19th century rural England) when the wizard Gandalf suggests that a group of Dwarves invite him on their quest to regain their homeland, Erebor from the dragon Smaug, which in the movie has been shown in the prologue. To Bilbo's own surprise, he goes with them. They meet some Trolls and are almost eaten, but are rescued by Bilbo's quick thinking and Gandalf. In movieverse, then meet the rather batty wizard Radagast who has discovered a dark force in the forest and are pursued by Goblins riding Wargs. In both verses, they go to Rivendell, home of the Elves, who help them (though in movieverse, the Dwarves distrust them, and are quite rude; in bookverse, the Elves are rather silly). Traveling through the Misty Mountains, the Dwarves encounter Stone Giants (in movieverse they nearly fall to their deaths), and then are captured by Goblins. Bilbo gets separated, and finds the Ring, then meets a strange small creature, Gollum, who agrees to guide him out if he wins a riddle game, then Bilbo discovers the Ring makes him invisible and escapes. The Dwarves meet the Great Goblin and are nearly killed when Gandalf rescues them; they meet Bilbo again but are chased by more the Wargs and Goblins, and climb a tree to escape, while Gandalf sets a fire to protect them. In movieverse, the Goblins are led by Azog, enemy of Thorin, and Bilbo surprises himself and everyone when he leaps to protect Thorin. The Dwarves nearly fall again, and are rescued by Gandalf's friends, the Eagles, and at the very end, Thorin says he was wrong about doubting Bilbo (the Hug on the Carrock) and they all see see Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, in the distance.

Part 2 (DOS) - The Dwarves find refuge in the house of Beorn, a giant shape-changer (in film trailers he appears as a more dangerous bear-creature). They go through the dreary Mirkwood and nearly starve, they get captured by giant spiders and then imprisoned by the Woodland Elves. Bilbo, using the Ring to turn invisible, rescues the Dwarves and they escape in barrels down the river (movie trailers indicate some Elf vs. Goblin battles during the escape). Resupplied in Lake-town, they go to Erebor and find the secret door, Bilbo goes into the mountain and matches wits with Smaug, the dragon. In the movie trailers, it looks as though there will be more scenes with Gandalf investigating the Necromancer of Dol Guldur.

Part 3 (TABA) - Bilbo discovers provokes Smaug into flying out and ravaging the land around and Lake-town, but he's discovered the dragon's weak spot. The human archer, Bard, kills Smaug while defending his people. After the dragon dies, the Dwarves enter the mountain but Thorin is driven mad by "gold sickness" as his grandfather was, and when the Lake-men and elves come to Erebor, he refuses to share any of the recovered wealth. Bilbo disagrees and gives them the Arkenstone, Erebor's greatest treasure, which he has found. The dwarves prepare to fight, but a host of Orcs and Wargs attacks, so they ally with the men, elves, eagles and Beorn, to win the battle. Fili and Kili die in battle, and Thorin, after reconciling with Bilbo, dies of his wounds (there are many fix-it Everybody Lives AUs). Bilbo takes a little gold returns to Hobbiton just in time to rescue his house, Bag End from his awful cousins.

New on Sept. 19, 2013: Recs for Trans and Genderqueer Hobbit Fic

You may wish to double-check your anchor tags, some of the links are showing up weird on my friendspage but ok here. Maybe missing a </a> after the name part?

My partner and I listened to the first half of the audiobook for The Hobbit before the film (AUJ) came out, and after we watched the film we argued extensively about whether the party was supposed to have visited the fancy elven city, or a more woodsy city, with my partner saying it was always the fancy city and that no woodsy city existed, and me saying it was the woodsy city they visit first and the fancy city later. Thanks to you mentioning Thranduil here, I looked it up and found that neither of us was quite right. If I'm getting it correctly now, Thranduil is king of the woodsy city (so it exists), but they actually visit it later in the book, not during the time which is in AUJ.

Yep, Rivendell is what I think of as the fancy city, Elrond's city. I was too lazy to look it up. :-P

Lovely overview! Quick correction, though: Lindir wasn't created just for the movies. He was a minor character in The Fellowship of the Ring, often thought to be an elven minstrel (book two, chapter 1: Many Meetings). You'll find him mentioned in the scene with Bilbo in The Hall of Fire, after Bilbo recites his epic poem to Frodo and the rest. Lindir teases Bilbo that he can't tell the difference between Hobbit poetry and the poetry of the race of Men.
