Why this must be read: It's a noirish retelling that results in a much darker tale. The narrator is Private Investigator Marie Slade, who is asked to take an unusual case. A very powerful and dangerous man has daughters who are chronically exhausted. The only clue is worn out shoes. Foul play is assumed, but the man has many enemies who might be the cause.
Slade is offered a bundle of money to wrap the case up quickly. What she finds is a house full of intrigue and something she wishes she hadn't--obvious signs of magic.
The language and pacing of the story made me feel I was smack in the middle of an old Bogart movie. The author stays true to it to the very end.
