Like in Cinderella, time is running out, and I expect this will be my last rec. It's been a blast having one last joyride. Cheers.

Fandom: Fairy Tales: Cinderella
Pairing/Characters: Cinderella/Princess, Cinderella/Stepmother
Length: 10K
Author Website: at AO3

Why this must be read: It's got the canon pieces but it's put together in a world of royal hierarchy and court intrigue.

Despite the pairing, there's no "ick incest" factor here. Cinderella is already grown and out of the house when her father marries his second wife, and they have no mother-daughter dynamic going. What they do have is a lot of secrets, a lot of politics and a lot of UST going on. Moody and absorbing and twisty. Enjoy.

Fandom: Fairy Tales: Original fairy tale with references to others
Characters: The King, The Queen, The Prince, The Peasant Girl, original and canon characters
Length: 12K words
Author Website: at AO3

Why this must be read: Because sometimes you need a little help figuring things out.

Despite having parents who were loving to him and beloved by their people, there was once a prince who was very spoiled indeed. His parents gently tried to point out how wrong-headed he was being, but I'm afraid they mis-stepped by spoiling their only child. Any beautiful thing he saw he wanted immediately, but often abandoned it for the next shiny.

One day, his fancy was captured by an unusually beautiful sunset and he decided he must own the sun. Though everyone, including the sun, tells him it is impossible, he is sure that a handsome prince like himself will be able to figure out how to accomplish his goal. Thus he begins a long and winding quest. Enjoy.

Fandom: Fairy Tales: Cinderella
Pairing/Characters: Cinderella/Prince Charming; Cinderella, Stepmother, Stepsisters, Fairy Godmother, OCs
Length: 10K words
Author Website: at AO3

Why this must be read: It's takes the fairy tale and turns it on its head in some respects and yet stays true to it.

This might be subtitled "Mothers and Daughters", as it really explores the relationships surrounding two sets of them: Cinderella and her stepmother and and Lady Westley and her headstrong daughter Mariana. The time is during the Regency era and this reads very much like a Jane Austen novel. Besides observing the action between the players, we also get information through letters and diary entries.

The biggest difference between our world and theirs is that magic is commonplace. Magical folk are born to non-magical folk and vice versa. So the appearance of a fairy godmother isn't quite so surprising. Enjoy.

I'm not quite sure when the cut-off will be, so I wanted to take the opportunity now to say how delightful it's been to share my love of fairy tale fanfic with you.  Because it is a Small Fandom, I had a chance to read and recommend so many more than I thought possible.  I tried to rout out stories of the more obscure canon as well as showcasing the well-known.  One more acknowledgement of Yuletide for ten years' worth of small fandom love.  Thanks to everyone who commented here and to the authors.  Feedback rocks and so do you.

Why this must be read: If you're looking for the dark of Red Riding Hood and perhaps a little more, give this a try. Grandaunt Tiger is sometimes referred to as the Chinese version of Red Riding Hood and I'm not sure which came first. But I'd have to call this a fusion of the fairy tales, with Snow White and Rose Red as characters in a blending of the other two. Enjoy.

Pairing/Characters: Belle/Beast; OFC
Length: 2K words
Author Website: at AO3

Why this must be read: Because sometimes you need a levelheaded woman to make sense out of a fairy tale.

And that woman is Cally, Belle's twin sister. A year after Belle has lived with the Beast, she's on a visit to her home, fully armed with the magic mirror and ring. She bubbles over with her love for the Beast, but Cally is concerned that her sister is being manipulated. When the mirror shows the Beast unconscious in the garden, Belle faints in alarm, which provides an opportunity for Cally to do a little investigating. Enjoy.

So, what if Aladdin was born a boy in the body of a female? How different would the tale have gone? Written for LGBT Fest, we see life through Aladdin's eyes and, through them, the Disney movie takes on a whole new view. Enjoy.

Yuletide pre-dates AO3, so this story was on the original site. When Yuletide was migrated to AO3, there were thousands of stories that did not get the exposure that they had enjoyed before. That's why I've had such fun digging up these older stories. This one is from Yuletide 2007.

Fandom: Fairy Tales: The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Pied Piper of Hamlin
Characters: The Princesses, The King, The Soldier, The Pied Piper, other canon and original characters
Length: 8K words
Author Website: at AO3

Why this must be read: Because despite our hope for a happily ever after, sometimes they just don't happen.

What do these two fairy tales have in common? They revolve around music and they remind us of the caveat "be careful what you wish for". Truth weaves them together as if they were one story instead of two, and the moodiness of the tale she's woven stays true all through the telling. Heed the warnings and then, if you're inclined for something a bit darker than usual, sink your teeth into this one.  Enjoy.

Why this must be read: Just a little light-hearted story that touches on crack.

A crisis has developed in the peaceful city of Agrabah. One of the water purifiers is on the blink, something that hasn't happened in over two hundred years and was last fixed by a sorcerer. Of course, the Genie would be able to fix it in a flash, but since gaining his freedom, trying to find him is problematical. Aladdin is out of town and Jasmine is informed that her accumulation of magical artifacts makes her their best hope for fixing the thing. And on top of that, it's "that" time of the month for the Queen.

As much as she would like to lay on her bed with a hot water bottle and eat bon-bons, Jasmine rises to the task of finding out what is wrong with the purifier. In doing so, everyone learns a lot. Enjoy.

She was young enough when her mother married Cinderella's father that she called him "Papa" and felt affection for him and sadness when he died. Although she was never mean and vindictive towards her stepsister, as her mother and sister were, she is consumed with guilt for not doing more to help Cinderella.

Now that Ellanora (Cinderella) is princess and her mother is in prison, Vivienne's life is worse as she's forced to live with her nasty sister. But there might be a little magic left to help her. Enjoy.

Why this must be read: It not only deals with the problematic issues of consent in canon, but is gender reversed as well, providing a delightful heroine.

This story starts at the christening of Prince Aurin, just after Merriweather bestows her gift that mitigates Maleficent's curse. Four-year-old Princess Phillipa, very observant and sensible for her four years of age, already knows she is betrothed to Aurin. She takes the moment of disarray caused by the situation to slip next to the baby and whisper her own gift: a vow to be a good queen, to look after him and his kingdom and keep them all safe.

9th-Jan-2014 11:33 am Esther and the Egg by sistermagpie (Gen)
I often laugh reading TV Tropes at how often a plot device is re-used on television. Little did I know that there are folk story tropes as well. If this plot seems similar to Bluebeard, it is! But it's actually a reworking of "Fitcher's Bird", which is a fairy tale from those grim Grimm brothers.

Fandom: Fairy Tales: Fitcher's Bird
Characters: Fitcher, OCs
Length: 3K
Author Website: at AO3

Why this must be read: Sistermagpie has done a terrific job of updating the setting to New York City during the Roaring Twenties, the flavor coming through in the descriptions and dialogue. Esther is a smart cookie with great gams who works as a dancer in a jazz club. The Egg is a customer who comes in occasionally; long enough to blow some money on a girl who catches his eye, sweeping her off her feet and out of the club. Although no woman taken away by the Egg is ever seen again, no one seems too fussed about it. Except Esther.

When Egg's eye finally lights on our heroine, Esther realizes that she's in trouble. But she knows she's got to keep her head and keep the faith if she doesn't want to lose her life. Enjoy.
