The Tale of Jack by DancingGrimm (Explicit)
Fandom: Fairy Tales: Jack and the Beanstalk
Pairing/Characters: Jack/The Giant; Jack's mother, OCs
Length: 41K words
Author Website: at AO3
Why this must be read: It's an awesome 21st century retelling that is full of angst, adversity, and true love.
Jack Bean's life could not be much worse. His father has died, leaving large debts. His mother is ill and can no longer work. He was outed by a horrible teacher, who also spread lies about him, forcing Jack to drop out of high school. Because he has not completed his education and lives in a tiny village, he can't find a job and is forced into a life of prostitution. The icing on the very bad cake is the horrible teacher is now one of his meanest customers.
When he attempts to sell the family car, there's only one buyer: a strange man who gives him money that mysteriously turns into an old paper. Jack despairs his situation, but then notices that the paper is actually a map. He decides to follow it to a very tall tree. His life then gets better in some ways, and worse. Enjoy.
