Why this must be read: Gale as a character often gets the short end of the stick, so a story like this one is always well appreciated. It recounts the events of the first book from Gale's perspective as he hunts in the woods to support two families, is forced to witness his best friend fighting for her life in the arena, and the comings and goings of District 12. Madge Undersee, a supporting character, takes on some wonderful dimension as she deftly maneuvers Gale into thinking long term rather and impulsively when Katniss is concerned.


He also spends more time hunting because he has more mouths to provide for, and frankly would rather be in the woods than in town or the Seam, where he gets nothing but pitying looks. Everyone knows he and Katniss are friends, and probably suspects they're more than friends or will get married at some point, but he can't endure the looks and prefers to spend his afternoons with animals and trees. The trees don't have eyes and if the animals look at him the wrong way, he can shoot them.
