That you all so much for allowing me the opportunity to rec some Hunger Games stories for you. Please, please check out the authors' individual sites. If you liked what you read, there are so many other wonderful stories out there to discover. The authors I featured are some of the best. You won't be disappointed. Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 2191 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on FFNWhy this must be read: This is a different twist on the Peeta as a Capitol citizen trope used in an earlier rec. Here he is an idealistic heir to Panem and his infatuation with the victor of the 74th Hunger Games doesn't stem from a desire to possess but from a desire to connect to another human being. This story is taut and excellently plotted. It's a tough balancing act for Katniss as she's pulled between the need to keep her family as far from President Snow's radar and her curiosity with his isolated and sheltered grandson. Her world slowly goes crumbling down when Peeta's well-meaning and thoughtful actions are used to pull Katniss further into the Capitol's world. ( Excerpt )The Heir to Panem by DustWriter

Vidder: killabeez Musical artist: Anais Mitchell Pairing: Katniss Everdeen, ensemble Vidder on LJ: killabeezVidder's website: vid tagWhy this vid kicks ass: For me, Dyin' Day had been a Hunger Games song ever since I first heard it and I often wished that someone would vid to it. Flashforward to vividcon2013 and this gem of a vid enters the world. This is a devastating vid. The violence of the games, the fear in the districts, and the loss of innocent children are front and center here. The song selection fits it so beautifully and the editing is a perfect complement to it. Watch this vid and the ugly reality of The Hunger Games reality opens up to you. Dyin' Day by killabeez

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 25,798 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: There's a class war brewing between the Haves and Have-Nots in the town of Panem and Katniss Everdeen has found herself in the middle of it. This story haunts me. Modern day AU Hunger Games fic is a popular genre in the fandom and when I think of modern day Hunger Games fic this is the one I hold as the gold standard. There's a powerful social and economic commentary throughout the series that takes what author Suzanne Collins hit upon in her trilogy and takes it to the next level. It's highly complex and well though out story that deserves a wider audience. There's a WIP sequel that is oh so good as well. Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark/Finnick Odair Length: 9055 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: This story is sad. Not in the "people die" sad, because they don't, but in the, "God, I can't believe this is their lives" type of sad. This heartbreaking story diverts from canon in that after Katniss and Peeta are crowned victors, there's no rebellion and no Quarter Quell involving previous victors. The "Star-Crossed Lovers of District 12" marry and eventually have every aspect of their "happy" union broadcast for the Capitol elite to witness, including their wedding night. Their bedroom activities become regular Capitol broadcasts until President Snow believes people are becoming bored with them--enter Finnick Odair. The feeling of horror lies in that the selling for desirable Hunger Games victors was a very real thing in the books, and it's not hard to imagine Katniss and Peeta falling into such a forced arrangement. The safety of loved ones is a powerful motivator. Finnick here is an interesting third as he serves as a guide to ease Katniss and Peeta further into a world that's painful and hopeless. Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 147,608 words Author on LJ: silvercisternAuthor Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: This trilogy is absolutely lovely. There's no other way to describe it. It begins in that uncertain place between the end of Mockingjay and the epilogue and fills in all the nooks and crannies that had remained empty. This story is a rich continuation of Suzanne Collin's characters and explores them as they embark on a life in post-war Panem. Their hopes, their fears, their lives--it's all in this trilogy. The first book is narrated by Peeta, the second by Katniss, and the third by Haymitch. By the time you finish it I'm almost certain that much, if not all of this story will enter into your personal head canon for the series. Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Gale Hawthorne/Madge Undersee & Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 18,146 words Author on LJ: solaryllisAuthor Website: Author on FFNWhy this must be read: Gale as a character often gets the short end of the stick, so a story like this one is always well appreciated. It recounts the events of the first book from Gale's perspective as he hunts in the woods to support two families, is forced to witness his best friend fighting for her life in the arena, and the comings and goings of District 12. Madge Undersee, a supporting character, takes on some wonderful dimension as she deftly maneuvers Gale into thinking long term rather and impulsively when Katniss is concerned. Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 134,369 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFNWhy this must be read: This historical AU story is based on an award winning children's novel written more than 20 years ago. After being educated in England, Katniss Everdeen boards The Mockingjay on a transatlantic journey to join her family in New England. She quickly finds herself in the middle of a mutiny and accused of murder by the ship's Captain Snow. The relationships Katniss makes with the ship's crew, including it's cook Cinna and young sailor Peeta Mellark slowly begin to unravel her limited vision of her orderly world. What is initially a slightly out of character Katniss (a well-bred young lady) beautifully segues into a more recognizable but equally independent young woman. The writing is taut and all-encompassing. Believe me, if you let this story consume you, you won't be able to put it down. ( Excerpt )A Favorable Wind by Court81981

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 7830 words Author on LJ: hotpiexoxoAuthor Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: The time between the end of The Hunger Games and the beginning of Catching Fire is time ripe for exploration. Both Katniss and Peeta must adjust to their new lives as victors and to the constant curiosity this new status brings them. They sold a love story and the district doesn't quite know what to make of it. We're privy to some of what Katniss goes through but Peeta's experiences remain somewhat of a mystery. This story explores that isolation and the coping mechanisms he utilizes. ( Excerpt )The Silence Breathes My Name by hotpielookedlikehotpie

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 8463 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: This is a Dark!Peeta fic and yes it's a thing. It's a wonderfully twisted and oh so delicious story with Peeta as President Snow's Capitol born grandson and Katniss a District 12 resident. It starts off innocently enough with the two of them meeting as young children during a Capitol trip to District 12. The two of them bond over a dandelion and a wish but are quickly parted until a 12 year old Katniss volunteers and wins the Hunger Games. After reconnecting, their bond progresses over the years. This Peeta is still recognizable as the Peeta from canon but fashioned through a Capitol citizen's world view. He positions himself in a way where he completely overtakes Katniss' life. It happens so slowly that Katniss never realizes it happening. The trauma of mentoring in the games year after year take their toll on her and she clutches to Peeta like a life-preserver. The depths to which Peeta manipulates circumstances so conveniently in his favor are revealed in the end and it leaves you feeling gutted. There's quite a few of Dark!Peeta fics out there and this one is a great place to start. ( Excerpt )The Wish by misshoneywell

Vidder: dayln03 Musical artist: Maggie Rogers Pairing: Katniss Everdeen, ensemble Vidder on LJ: gigglemonsterVidder's website: lensflair_incWhy this vid kicks ass: You always remember your first and boy was this one a doozy. This vid is absolutely gorgeous and the one that I measure all Hunger Games vids against. The music selection is flawless and especially poignant, while the editing is sharp and drives home the visual and emotional parallels throughout the movie. This is Katniss' story but it is through her that the world of Panem and people important to her are opened up. There are powerful moments peppered from start to finish--whether it's glimpses of Mrs. Everdeen, the juxtaposition of Prim and Rue, Capitol citizens trivializing death, the other tributes or the growing sparks of the rebellion--no story line is left unexplored. Even if you are unfamiliar with The Hunger Games, watch this vid. It's a perfect example of how strong song selection, editing, and the right source can evoke strong emotion. embers: "if they die, i'll still remember"

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 16,101 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: It almost seems cruel to rec this story because I get a pain in my heart just thinking about it. Set some time post-epilogue, it chronicles the slow deterioration of Peeta's health. The effects of his Capitol hijacking has deteriorated his brain to the point where medical intervention is impossible. Katniss goes through a roller coaster of emotions. There is the very real fear that the loss of Peeta could turn her into her mother and Annie Cresta, forcing her children to grow up faster than necessary. There's also the desire to hold on to Peeta and fight a losing battle with the realities of his health. This is a beautifully written story and the subject matter should in no way deter you from reading it. Everyone needs a good cry now and then right? Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Gale Hawthorne, Peeta Mellark/Original Character, Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 29,346 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: What if Prim was never reaped? What if Peeta was never reaped either? What if there was no rebellion and therefore no mockingjay, just Panem living under the annual Hunger Games? It's a scenario that is brought up often in fandom. Katniss Everdeen has always maintained that she was never going to marry because to her that equals having children. She would never willingly risk a child of hers to the reaping. What this story examines is Katniss' life in District 12 after all of her loved ones have survived the annual reapings and her eventual marriage to Gale. The boy with the bread is someone she rarely if ever crosses paths with until a chance encounter long after their individual marriages. This story tackles so many fascinating topics including the class structure in District 12, safe birth control in a world where populations control is certainly not pushed by the government, the politics of marriage when both partners want different things, and the very ugly side of infidelity. Heads up that are some sensitive issues addressed in the fic but it's a damn good story and shouldn't be missed. ( Excerpt )Hero of the Story by atetheredmind

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 1911 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on FFNWhy this must be read: Post-Mockingjay and told in reverse, this story of Katniss and Peeta's lives is peppered with lines that are absolutely heartbreaking. Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen, Gale Hawthorne Length: 4113 words Author on LJ: lit_chick08Author Website: Fic journalWhy this must be read: Katniss and Gale hunt in the woods. Sometimes it's easy to forget that they in fact have not known each other their whole lives but only first crossed paths after the deaths of the fathers. That being said I love that this story insinuates that of course they would have a least known about each other before they officially met. What this story beautifully presents is Katniss and Gale's world before the 74th Hunger Games with all its struggles and small victories. It's a young Gale and Katniss learning from each other and learning to trust that they have each other's backs. ( Excerpt )Four Times Katniss Wasn't Reaped (And One Time She Was) by lit_chick08

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Peeta Mellark Length: 1059 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: Mellark family dynamics are an interesting thing. Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins doesn't tell us too much except that as a young boy Peeta's mother would use abuse as discipline and that his father gave cookies to Katniss before she left for the Capitol. In some segments of the fandom that has translated into the kindly Mr. Mellark married to an evil witch of a woman who beats her children. What I find interesting about this story is that it shows how the individual enabling the abuse is just as responsible for the abuse as the one inflicting it. Peeta's father is not a bad man but in this series of short vignettes Mr. Mellark's complicity has far reaching consequence on the Mellark family as a whole.( Excerpt )Teamwork by swishywillow

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 2191 words Author on LJ: loveleeeficAuthor Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: It's easy to categorize this one as hot (it is, very) and leave it at that, but it's also so much more. During a Victory Tour Capitol party, Katniss begins to feel that efforts to showcase her and Peeta's "romance" are proving unsuccessful. She and Peeta sneak away to give the gossip mill some fodder. The two of them must walk a fine line between showmanship and sincerity and in this story there's a desperation on Katniss' part that's reached a new high. Peeta plays his part as well and he's torn between wanting what Katniss offers and hating himself because he does. This story is a wonderfully potent read that is not to be missed. Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES/THE LITTLE MERMAID (HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN) Pairing: Lavinia (Avox), Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark (Everlark) Length: 4829 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN | Author on TumblrWhy this must be read: When I first read this story I instantly fell in love. Author Mejhiren has a beautiful prose style and it lends itself perfectly to this Hunger Games story by way of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. Avox Lavinia stands in for our mermaid, who trades her tongue to the witch-king for human legs. Anyone familiar with the original story knows where this one is going but there's enough deviation to make this one extra special. ( Excerpt )Sea Child by Mejhiren

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: gen, Peeta Mellark, Haymitch Abernathy Length: 1907 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on FFNWhy this must be read: Regardless of fandom, fic that can easily slip into canon are my personal favorites, and this story is no different. It's the morning of Reaping Day for the 74th Hunger Games and while Katniss and Gale spend time in the woods, Peeta mans the storefront of the Mellark family bakery. Reaping Day means different things to different people. For most, it's a day to dread while for the more opportunistic minded, it's a way to make a quick buck. This story is peppered with subtle details that resonates with anyone who is familiar with the books. We know where these characters will be by the end of the day and that makes the story even more poignant. ( Excerpt )Breaking Bread by Danny Bailey

Greeting fellow crack_van aficionados. I'm abby82 and I'll be driving the final Hunger Games van. It's a good time to be a Hunger Games fan. The second movie, Catching Fire, has just been released in theaters to rave reviews and the final two movies based on the final book are currently being filmed. Hopefully that means a lot of new fic will be popping up in the coming months as people discover and rediscover the fandom.
I'm a huge Peeta and Everlark fan so my selections will lean in that direction but never fear, many of The Hunger Games' primary players will get their time in the sun. So let's get started.
Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: gen, Caesar Flickerman Length: 1853 words Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Author on AO3 | Author on FFN Why this must be read: In The Hunger Games, a great majority of the residents of the Capitol live in a world filled with decadence and ignorance. This story has the difficult task of humanizing a prominent Capitol resident, showman Caesar Flickerman, and his role in the Games' yearly institutionalized murder of 23 children. Author Queen_Mab perfectly depicts the moment the tributes go from being worthless children to actual human beings. It's an extremely delicate character study of Caesar and the original character of Dixie, a young tribute, is the perfect, heart-breaking vehicle. I wept for Dixie as she endured the Games and wept for Caesar as reality finally dawned on him. This is a beautiful story that is not to be missed.

Fandom: Hannibal (tv)/The Hunger Games Pairing: Abigail-centric, sort of Abigail/Will Length: ~5900 words Author on LJ: jeremy_finchAuthor Website: on ffn.net, on AO3, and their lj masterlist (slightly out of date) Why this must be read:Hannibal characters in the Hunger Games universe! Abigail Hobbs, the girl who did what she had to survive, as a tribute! This fic was basically demanding to be written, and the author did it beautifully. (...full disclosure: I provided the prompt that later resulted in this fic. But I wouldn't rec anything I wasn't confident in, and I adore this.) Abigail's characterization is fantastic, her drive to keep going really keeping the story engaging. I also love Hannibal as a former victor, Abigail's mentor (of course), with his attention to details in training. And Will Graham, opening the fic by rescuing an injured deer, when he should be focused on saving himself (of course). There are appearances and references to several other Hannibal characters; I especially love Freddie's brief appearance. I've got a plan, I've got an atlas in my hands (also on AO3 and ffn.net)

Fandom: The Hunger Games Pairing: Gen (I'd label it pre-Katniss/Peeta) Length: 2,932 Rating: PG-13 Warnings: spoilers for the first book Author on LJ: Author's Website: antistar_e (kaikamahine) on AO3Summary: There were very strict rules regarding what you could and could not do to another person's daemon in the Games. [daemon fusion fic.] Why this must be read: This fic is entirely from Peeta's point of view and covers some vital moments with the addition of daemons. Each scene is carefully crafted to give us an in-depth look at how Peeta's daemon settled, and therefore in essence about how Peeta accepts who he is--a very powerful subject given that Peeta's acceptance of not being a fighter is also his acceptance of death in the Games. The ending is great, but it's especially powerful if you know what happens next in canon. This fic is the very definition of short but sweet. This fic is listed as gen, but I'm calling the author's bluff. It's easily read as pre-Katniss/Peeta. Just so you know. Geothermal

Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: None Length: ~1800 words Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: FFNWhy this must be read: By the time the 74th Annual Hunger Games rolls around, the people of Panem are pretty well-adjusted to the existence and purpose of the Games. So it's easy to think that this may have always been the case. In this fic, the author bluntly presents a haunting overview of how that adjustment might have come about--and how much more blood was shed in the process. This is a story that will leave you frozen in your seat, and the endnote will make you rethink the entire book series. Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Gale/Katniss, Katniss/Peeta Length: ~1100 words Author on LJ: electrumqueenAuthor Website: Fic tagWhy this must be read: A character study of Gale after the war, this fic gives him more depth than we saw even in Mockingjay. It's never been clear to me whether Gale belonged in the same category, so to speak, as the various Victors, having chosen to fight and on what terms. But in just a few short, clear scenes, electrumqueen hints at the tragic parallels and contrasts between his choices and what might have been. Fandom: THE HUNGER GAMES Pairing: Katniss/Peeta Length: ~8k words Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: FFNWhy this must be read: DustWriter does another master AU, though this one is of the "what could have been" vein. "A Year With No Victor" puts a Romeo & Juliet sort of spin on the Games, where Katniss is a Career, Peeta is Peeta, and things proceed under different circumstances...to a point. The ending is particularly haunting. ( It was the first time since the Reaping he'd forgotten to be afraid. )A Year With No Victor
