Rain by Fialka (NC-17 for sexual situations)
Fandom: Farscape
Pairing: John/Aeryn
Author on LJ:
fialka
Author Website: a toe in the water
Why this must be read:
This was the first piece of fanfic, which wasn't on a board or in LJ, that I gave instant feedback on. I read it, got to the end, hit the link to her email address and send feedback. I have never done that before and haven't since. This piece moved me in ways I wasn't expecting it to and I just had to tell the author. Fialka has been recced here before and really you cannot go wrong with anything she writes, in any fandom.
This takes place just after the events of Relativity during the Tayln arc of S3 and has major spoilers. So once again we are shoving the rest of this behind a cut tag.
Xhalax is dead, Aeryn is in shock and John is trying to comfort as best as he can. This is one of those quiet moments when all the defenses are down and there is just a searing honesty between these two. The need to be with each other, Aeryn's love, John's understanding, it's all there wrapped in a curtain of water that feels like rain.
What makes this piece so bittersweet is that we know how it ends. We know that it's all taken away and Aeryn does in many ways become Xhalax, regardless of what she might have said. We look at Aeryn's love and see it's dark core and the seeds of her not coping being laid piece by piece. We see this John and his actions, his understanding of what she needs and his willingness to give it to her, reflected in how the other John acts later when the crews are reunited. However, in this one moment we see the love, the joy and yes even the pain and even though we know it's all going to end badly, we can't help but be happy for them.
Excerpt:
He takes the bottom of her shirt in both hands. There's a question remaining in her eyes, but her arms rise above her head.
Aeryn docile. That's a flavour of her he hasn't tasted yet.
He smiles and leans down to kiss the tip of her nose. It's further away than it should be and for a moment he wonders if this thing with Xhalax has made her smaller somehow. Then he looks at their feet and starts to laugh.
"I think I forgot a step."
She waits while he strips off his boots and pants, arms folded beneath her bare breasts. Oblivious to the picture she makes. He's never known a woman who wasn't either consciously posing or slightly embarrassed, standing before him undressed. Aeryn is neither, she's just Aeryn without half her clothes, still trying to figure out what's going on inside his head.
