Why this must be read: Memorandum is a melancholy excercise in memory that rewards a reader's close attention. Sparcck's Sean is painfully human, and his interaction with Orlando is funny and sad and real. The flawless incorporation of deja vu into the narrative gives this story the sort of familiarity and credibility that a more traditional, linear style of storytelling wouldn't achieve, and the ending (which feels more like a beginning) is beautiful.

He's reminded of Orlando slipping when he swung a foot over the edge of the bed, barely catching himself in time, and the faint whiff of whisky, the squelch of his thick carpet.

Orlando looking up at him seemingly a thousand times, variations of the same expression, and maybe he didn't miss his chance, maybe it wasn't ignorance it was self-preservation, or maybe that's what he has to tell himself now, so he can still look at his friend and not feel so guilty.

So he carries the mugs to the lounge, carefully placing them on the end tables, and when Orlando pads in, vigorously scrubbing at his hair, dressed again in his boxers and undershirt, Sean can genuinely smile at him, seeing all these memories cobbled together in the man standing, as always, unselfconsciously half-nude in his living room, and maybe he tells the same story because he wants to keep the others for himself, same as Sean, although he knows soon it will be the memory of the memory rather than the memories themselves.
