Why this must be read: It's kind of hard to explain. It's an unusual story, both in subject matter and in the kind of nightmarish narration we get from an injured John. It's like your deepest, darkest secret dream, where you're kind of terrified and you're kind of turned on. And you're not sure which is worse.

This is so one of those stories that is so good, and shouldn't be (not because Feldman isn't immensely talented) but because the combination of characters reads like a bad joke. But it is that good. It really, really is.
