OZ/SVU (NC-17)
Title: Haunted by Aim, Brian, Dimples, Jen and Wifey
Pairing: Beecher/Keller; can't spoil the rest
Author on LJ: ???
Why this must be read: It's a dark, wicked, funny, sexy, ingenious melding of two fictional worlds and Tobias Beecher's struggle to escape both. Plus, it has a great Stanislofsky, a shrewd player whose entertaining run on the show was too short.
The real strength of "Haunted" comes in the Oz characterizations and the Oz plot: Keller, McManus, Murphy, Schillinger, Stanislofsky, Wittlesey and more. All the scheming and plotting and conniving you expect in Oz, but tied to the outside world through a paroled Beecher, who is a suspect in the murder of Jason Schillinger, Vern's son.
The SVU gang is called to investigate the brutal killing. Did Beecher do it? Was he set up? Was anyone in Oz involved?
SVUers aren't drawn as well as the Ozzies. If you are a Benson fan, you might want to steer clear. The story was written in SVU's infancy, when Benson was overly emotional. She does get some good shots in, but she takes more. The rest (Munch, Cassidy, Jeffries, Cragen) are mostly bit players.
The two protagonists, Beecher and Stabler, parallel the Oz/SVU lines. Beecher is a complex, acerbic, exasperating, sexy, vengeful, heart-breaking mass of all the contradictions that led him to Oz to begin with.
Stabler is less familiar, probably because his character hadn't been established yet. But the core of him is there: sexy, solid, dependable, faithful, sure.
Beecher sees more, of course - and less. Chris Keller with a badge. And a conscience. And a family - a wife and kids. A career. A future.
Toby has none of those things.
When he meets Stabler, Toby sees the chance to be with Chris again. Even if it isn't the same - it's as close to heaven as he'll get. Or will it all lead him back to hell?
ETA: This story was the result of a round-robin and the level of writing is remarkable, especially considering there were five different writers. Perhaps because of the multiple authors, there's a great variety of characters. Not every turn works, but most of them do. And the main players, especially from Oz, are well-drawn. A snippet, just to show the level of characterization:
Nikolai Stanislofsky writhed in pain, but the drugs at least took some of the sting off. He heard a clinking of chains as someone neared his bed, and forced his eyes open. Over him stood Chris Keller, hands cuffed behind his back and Whittlesey at his elbow. Nikolai managed a smile.
"That is what I love about this country. You yell loud enough, and things happen."
Keller smiled back, and Nikolai swallowed instinctively. The man packed a punch, handcuffs or no handcuffs. Keller then turned those killer blues on Whittlesey, and motioned to the restraints.
