Why this must be read:
This is very much a mood piece. A perfect evocation of a time and place. It's a hot, still Caribbean afternoon and Elizabeth Turner is sitting in her parlor--all the windows open in vain hopes of catching the merest stirrings of a breeze--just resting and reflecting and waiting for her men to come home. This is a beautifully written story, perfectly capturing that almost unreal feeling that "queer lassitude" of a hot summer afternoon. The prequel, Bhimpalasi: Futtock, is also quite good.
