STAR TREK:VOYAGER - AN OVERVIEW

Welcome to the Delta Quadrant, where weird is part of the job.

Star Trek: Voyager is the fourth instalment of the Star Trek franchise, and my personal favourite. I'll wait for the boos and hisses to die down before I continue.

The series has what is arguably the most intriguing premises in Star Trek: a group of the Federation's finest are flung 70,000 light-years from Earth, to the heretofore-unexplored Delta Quadrant. There they join forces with a ship of also far-flung Maquis whom they have been chasing. Their mission? To find their way home.

While it remains flawed, and does not live up to it's initial promise, it features many interesting situations and characters, and consistently good production values. This is not meant to be a serious critique; though I have managed to figure out the overweening message of the show – have babies, go to jail, and die; repeatedly and not necessarily in that order.

On with the overview.

OUR HEROES

USS Voyager, NCC 74656

Intrepid class. 15 decks. Crew complement of 141 - at least for a few minutes. The newest, fastest ship in Starfleet, capable of sustaining warp 9.975. The computer network's isolinear circuitry is augmented by gel packs that contain bioneural gel, connected to bioneural circuitry that makes the ship more responsive, and also capable of catching a cold. (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] canthlian for clarifying this)

Captain Kathryn Janeway

Played by the steely Kate Mulgrew.

Captain Janeway is an explorer with a thirst for scientific knowledge and coffee. Born in Indiana, she leaves behind a fiancé, Marc, and a pregnant dog, Molly. She single-mindedly, some might say obsessively, works to get her ship and crew back to Earth using her intelligence, strength, humour, and a big-ass gun. She's deeply attached to her crew, but holds herself aloof, maintaining 'a Captain's distance', perhaps due to the guilt she feels for destroying their best method of getting back home during the first episode.

Commander Chakotay

Played by the wooden Robert Beltran.

Chakotay, he of no first name, goes from captaining the Maquis ship The Liberty to being first officer under Janeway. A former Starfleeter Lt. Commander, his deeply held convictions led him to resign and join the Marquis uprising. To him falls the unenviable, yet surprisingly easy, task of merging the two crews. Spiritual, philosophical, loyal, tattooed; an angry warrior. He'll build you a bathtub, but don’t let him pilot a shuttlecraft.

Lt Commander Tuvok

Played by the under-utilised Tim Russ.

Tuvok was employed as a spy on The Liberty when she made her unexpected journey to the Delta Quadrant. It can be argued that Voyager followed the Maquis ship so diligently in order to extricate him. Chief of security on Voyager, our resident Vulcan is Janeway's oldest friend and (sorry Chakotay) probably her most trusted advisor. He leaves a wife and several children on Vulcan.

Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH)

Played by the multi-talented Robert Picardo

Activated in the Delta Quadrant when the entire medical staff is killed, the Doctor takes a while to master such useful human traits as humour, a bedside manner, and opera. Much more than the sum of his programming, Doc ends up becoming an integral part of the Voyager family.

Lt Tom Paris

Played by the blue-eyed Robert Duncan McNeill

Tom, the best damn pilot you could want, starts off despised by Fleeter and Maquis alike. Kicked out of Starfleet in disgrace, grudgingly accepted into the Maquis and captured on his first mission; Janeway has him released from prison in order to guide her efforts in tracking down The Liberty. He's got father issues, a love for the ladies (in particular a certain Chief Engineer), and a fascination with 20th century Earth culture. Prime instigator in the creation of the Delta Flyer - the best damn shutlecraft in the universe.

Lt B'Elanna Torres

Played by the lovely Roxann Dawson.

Half-human, half-Klingon, B'Elanna is a woman of fierce pride, conflicted loyalty, determination, intelligence, and deep insecurity. Dropping out of Starfleet because she felt unwanted, she joined the Maquis and fought at Chakotay's side. Promoted to Chief Engineer, she runs her department with an iron fist, but displays much vulnerability in her personal life, her disparate heritages constantly at war.

Ensign Harry Kim

Played by the pretty Garrett Wang

A brand-new graduate of the Academy, Harry is eager, naïve, and quick to offer friendship to both Tom and B'Elanna. The much-adored son of concerned parents, Harry leaves behind his girlfriend, Libby, and his clarinet, which remains unnamed. Doomed to perpetual Ensignhood and falling in love with the wrong woman, Harry bravely goes on to die several times. He gets better.

Neelix

Played by the unrecognisable Ethan Phillips.

A Talaxian scavenger and native of the Delta Quadrant, Neelix scams and charms his way onto Voyager, getting them to rescue his girlfriend, Kes, in the process. Jealous and suspicious in the beginning, he embraces life on board ship, making himself useful as a guide, cook, unofficial ambassador, and official bane of Tuvok's existence.

Kes (seasons 1-3)

Played by the pixie-like Jennifer Lien.

Kes joins the crew as little more than a refugee and Neelix's girlfriend, but she soon becomes a favourite with her calm optimism and ability to offset some of the EMH's abrasiveness in sickbay. An Ocampa - a DQ race that lives for only 9 years - Kes has some telepathic abilities that she works with Tuvok to enhance. She leaves early in the fourth season, and in a better universe she never returns.

Seven of Nine (seasons 4-7)

Played by the beautiful Jeri Ryan

Seven first came aboard Voyager when Janeway made a deal with the Borg Collective, and stayed, quite unwillingly, when Janeway decided to 'restore' her humanity. Born Annika Hansen, she was assimilated as a child when her anthropologist parents got a little too close to their subjects. Brusque, unbending, and arrogant, she works with the EMH to learn how to be human. She becomes more easy-going and accepting of humans and her own humanity, though she never manages to have a romantic relationship with any of the crew. God, I can't keep lying to myself.

SELDOM SEEN, BUT ALWAYS ON OUR MINDS

Rarely present, they may be a minor part of the show, but they often play a major role in fic.

Lt Joe Carey: Starfleet, engineer, married with kids back in the Alpha Quadrant. Got his nose broken by B'Elanna, likes to make ships in bottle. Dead.

Ensign Samantha Wildman: Starfleet, xenobiologist. Married to a Ktarian, she's pregnant when she joins Voyager and gives birth to a daughter, Naomi Wildman, during season 2.

Naomi Wildman: Captain's Assistant, Neelix's goddaughter. Cute kid, especially with the forehead spikes.

Ensigns Megan and Jenny Delany: Starfleet. Twins; dated Tom and Harry. The objects of much speculation.

Admiral Owen Paris: Starfleet, Alpha Quadrant. Tom's father, Janeway's mentor.

Reg Barclay: Starfleet, Alpha Quadrant. Yes, good old Reg from ST:NG, hard at work on the Pathfinder project, trying to bring Voyager home.

Ensign Lon Suder: Maquis, engineer. Psychotic Betazoid, reformed. Killed saving Voyager.

Denara Pel - Vidiian, doctor. Works with the EMH to develop a cure for the phage, they fall in love.

Rain Robinson - Human, 20th century Earth astronomer. Helps out Tuvok and Tom when they visit LA.

Icheb - Former Borg. Youngster taken under Seven's wing.

Ensign Vorik - Starfleet, engineer. Vulcan male who's pon farr results in wackiness.

OUR ENEMIES

The Caretaker

The fellow that started it all by bringing the ships to the Delta Quadrant with his Array. One of those all-powerful god-like creatures that think that all humans share a deep longing for life on a Kentucky farm in the 1930s.

Seska

A Cardassian surgically altered to resemble a Bajoran she spied on the Maquis while pretending to serve their cause. (Chakotay - Was anyone on my ship working for me?) Unable to stand serving under Janeway, and unable to convince her former lover Chakotay to rebel, she joined forces with the Kazon, and proceeded to make merry hell for the folks on Voyager. Villainous highlights - stealing mushroom soup, stealing Chakotay's DNA, stealing the ship, reprogramming Tuvok's training holo-program.

The Kazon

Violent and disorganised, the Kazon are divided into 18 sects, each ruled by a Maje. Maje Culluh of the Nistrim allies himself with Seska, who makes him quite dangerous. Without her, the Kazon are just misogynists with funny hair.

The Vidiians

A race plagued with a nasty degenerative disease called the phage, they roam the sector harvesting organs from the unwary in an attempt to prolong their own lives. Quite nasty, even when they wear a familiar face; or lungs, whichever.

The Borg

Part machine, part organic. Concise, deadly, keep wanting to laminate our ass. Oh, you know them.

Q

Ah, Q, back to torment the Federation with your mischievous omnipotence. Even more flirtatious with Janeway than he was with Picard.

Annorax

A Krenim scientist, not only can he manipulate the very fabric of time, wiping entire civilisations from ever having existed, but he also killed RoboCop, dumbass.

The Hirogen

A race of hunters, proud and rigid in their traditions; best not be their prey.

Kashyk

A member of a race, the Devore, that doesn't tolerate telepaths in their space, he inspects Janeway - Voyager, I mean Voyager - for any signs of non-compliance. Likes classical music and baiting strong women.

Species 8472

Firstly, the Borg are scared of them. Secondly, they have tentacles. Like that's not enough to haunt your dreams.

Satan's Robot

C'mon! Satan's Robot!

The Holodeck

Has caused more damage to Starfleet than the Borg, the Romulans, and the Klingons combined.

THE SERIES

Season One

A short season, only 16 episode, it starts off with a bang - Caretaker parts I & II are an excellent introduction to the characters and situation; plus I daresay it has one of the highest body counts of any single (fine, double) Trek episode. Tensions between the former Maquis crew and the Starfleet crew are present and accounted for, we meet the Vidiians, who are pretty damn menacing, and Torres confronts her dual heritage face to face.

Favourite episodes - Caretaker I & II, The Phage, Faces.

Season Two

The season of babies. Sam Wildman gives birth, twice; sort of. Kes decides that Neelix should make her a mom. Tom and Neelix resolve their differences for the sake of their baby; sort of. Tuvok and Neelix combine their DNA. Chakotay loses the ship when he tries to get his baby.

Not to mention; the crew finds out what happened to Amelia Earhart, Harry dies, Tom's tongue falls out and he and Janeway have some hot lizard loving (and, in keeping with the theme, babies), Q has a death wish and Q comes along to teach Q how to live and love though, in the end, it's Q that teaches Q the real lesson.

One of the major complaints about Voyager is that the Maquis integrated too quickly, but there's still plenty of tension here as a traitor, or two, is revealed and a murder is discovered aboard ship.

Favourite episodes - Non Sequitor, Maneuvers, Meld, Deadlock, Basics part I.

Season Three

The crew finds real unity as they work together to recover Voyager; and, really, it makes sense that they would bond over this. Harry and Tom go to jail, the EMH goes to family therapy, the entire crew goes to 1990s LA to fight the evil Ed Begley Jr (didn't you always kind of suspect it?), the Maquis go back to their rebellious ways, B'Elanna goes into heat, and Janeway and Chakotay go on vacation. After all that, they lose the ship - again - and get it back in time to run into a whole mess of Borg, who are fleeing from an enemy even stronger than themselves, and enter into a Faustian bargain with them.

Favourite episodes - The Chute, Blood Fever, Before and After, Displaced

Season Four

Bye Kes. Hi Seven. Torres and Paris find love, the crew becomes a science experiment, the Hirogen introduce the crew to role playing, the Doc saves the day, Janeway has a really bad year, Seven finds god, Chakotay falls in love with a forgettable woman, and, oh yeah, they make contact with the Alpha Quadrant.

Favourite episodes - Scientific Method, Year of Hell Parts I & II, Message In A Bottle, The Killing Game Parts I & II, Living Witness

Season Five

Seven starts dating, B'Elanna starts risking, Tom becomes environmentally aware and Janeway throws him in the brig, Janeway officially becomes Queen (of the Spider People), everyone dies but Harry and Chakotay, and there's another Federation ship in the DQ.

This may be the season that Janeway sinks into megalomania.

Favourite episodes - Once Upon A Time, Timeless, The Bride of Chaotica, Someone To Watch Over Me

Season Six

B'Elanna is an inspiration, Seven is an Ultimate Fighter and a mother-figure, the Doc is everything to everybody, Tom cheats on B'Elanna and the Delta Flyer at the same time, Janeway ministers her flock, the holodeck malfunctions, and the Borg rebel. And, yeah, Kes comes by for a visit.

Favourite episodes - Barge Of The Dead, Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy, Pathfinder, Memorial, Tsunkatse, Muse

Season Seven

Neelix finds the lost tribe and stays with them, B'Elanna and Tom tie the knot and kill the rabbit, the entire crew gets real jobs, the Doc writes a novel and raises the issue of holographic rights, Seven and Chakotay get it on, Janeway butts heads with herself, and Chakotay takes a walk through the ship's history and future.

Yeah, and they all end up on Earth after 23 years in the Delta Quandrant - but not if Janeway has anything to say about it.

Confused? I know; Seven and Chakotay? What were they smoking?

Favourite episodes - Drive, Critical Care, Shattered, Prophecy, Workforce Part I & II

It is powered by gel packs that contain bioneural gel

No it isn't. It's powered by a warp core. :P

Yay! I've got to admit that Voyager was always my favorite one too, despite being obviously craptastic most of the time. Great overview!

I loved Voyager, too, but second to TNG. First season EMH was *priceless* - oh, and he made a cameo in the First Contact movie. ;)

Thanks for the overview!

He'll build you a bathtub, but don’t let him pilot a shuttlecraft.

Ah, bless.

Haha!

One of those all-powerful god-like creatures that think that all humans share a deep longing for life on a Kentucky farm in the 1930s.

I remember watching the pilot and thinking, “Omigod, it’s Green Town, Illinois — they’ve been sucked into a Ray Bradbury story!”

C'mon! Satan's Robot!

Hey, no argument here!

Tom cheats on B'Elanna and the Delta Flyer at the same time

You may want to add a line about the Delta Flyer to Tom’s bio or something.

An excellent overview and very funny too. Thanks!

OK, I already know most of this, but it was a very enjoyable read (and I did enjoy the pictures of the senior staff without their alien stuff/tattoos/Borg implants/weird hair-dos) - very good! :)

Oh, dear lord, no.

*Begin Geek Spiel*

Voyager is powered by a class 9 warp core, one of the most advanced designs of the time. Power from the warp core, generated by the controlled matter/antimatter detonation within the core is distributed -- as it is on all Federation ships -- by the EPS network, which is a series of plasma conduits throughout the ship. Propulsion for the ship -- again, as on all Federation vessels -- is generated by the warp nacelles at the rear of the ship. The huge amounts of power generated by the warp core are pumped into the nacelles, which in turn generate the warp field. The warp field pushes the ship ever so slightly into Subspace, changing the laws of physics around the ship, and allowing it to move at faster-than-light speeds.

The computer network system for Voyager, like most Federation ships, uses isolinear circuitry. However, this circuitry is augmented by a series of bio-neural gel packs, running throughout the length of the ship. These gel packs provide faster communications and processing of data. The downside is that they are difficult to replace when they're damaged, and Voyager has a limited supply of replacements.

*Snips the rest of the spiel*

Terrific overview! I'm feeling all nostalgic now... Voyager is my favourite series as well. Despite seasons 4 thru 7. I loved the humour present in many of the episodes from seasons 1 thru 3 which I've been watching lately on the Space Channel. The EMH was a riot during those first days in the Delta quadrant, like when he yells "Wake up!" in Tom Paris' ears in one episode. I can't think of the name off hand. Anyways, thanks again!!

Very nice overniew, Voyager is my personal favorite too. The writing may not have been as good, but it had the best, most interesting characters, imo. I've never read much fic in this fandom so I'm very much looking forward to the recs.

Oh... this makes me want to go write Voyager fic again. ~sniff~ All those fabulous early seasons... The delectable Janeway...

I always mean to go and write more - I have a multi-parter AU I'd love to finish someday - but I know I'll never actually do it. I feel like I'll just be covering old ground and quite frankly, I'm terrible at anything but one-shots. Sigh. I miss that fandom.

yes it reminds me too. and i've been enjoying the reruns being shown on spiketv to no end. i can't wait until i have the money to buy the whole series on dvd.

i know! so unfair. the cheapest i've seen them is used on amazon.com, but it's still a lot.
