The Shadow of the Hawke by Chajka - PG13

Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Gen, AU
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author Website: not that I know of. Her Man from U.N.C.L.E. fiction is on File40, http://file40.net/file40g/chajka_stories.html
Why this must be read:

When I first discovered Man from U.N.C.L.E. online fanfic, I read everything I could find on the net, slash, gen, weird, silly, and ended up with the usual stomach-ache of too much to digest, let alone remember. As stories started sorting themselves out in my brain, I went back and re-read the ones that had made a deeper impression. And halfway through the re-read process, I knew I had to go back and find one that I felt had really done an outstanding job in moving Napoleon and Illya to an alternate time and roles without changing their characterization or their ultimate purpose, and that felt deeply satisfying on a historical basis, as well as being long enough to be a chewy read...If only I could remember the title!

I finally re-found Chajka's 'Shadow of the Hawke' right on File40 where it had been all along, and it has remained one of my favorite alternate universe stories because it feels right, it's a solid piece of storytelling, its minor characters and villain are well-fleshed out and recognizable, and the ideals and beliefs expressed by the characters throughout hew true to the MfU spirit. It's a thoroughly enjoyable read, with some hurt/comfort and a good ending.
