In the first story, Holmes, after a verbal fencing match with Mary Watson, comes to a fateful decision:

Of course. What else? Moriarty – morte. Ever since I first ran afoul of the professor, those two words have formed an association in my mind. Now I begin to see why. Bless the old devil, he shall be more helpful to me than he knows.

In the sequel, Watson, having seen his former flat mate out the door and his wife to bed, ponders the half-sensed undercurrents in the evening’s conversation.

For some reason, Mary’s words on Holmes – though well-intentioned, no doubt – have stuck with me. Cornered animal. Un-ordinary mortal. Fascinating.

My Holmes…

I draw deeply on the cigar and find my insecurities returning to me, full-force. Once again, in the absence of Holmes’s sardonic quips and Mary’s tender smile, I become convinced that something was amiss tonight. But as usual, I am in the dark. The ordinary mortal.

Just wanted to let you know that the first link seems to be coded weirdly and doesn't work.

Also, wonderful, wonderful recs :) I've dabbled into the Sherlock Holmes fandom about a year or so ago and these two fics were some of my favorites back then. They made *sense*. Thanks for giving me this trip down memory lane.
