Why this must be read:

In “The Adventure of the Three Garridebs,” a bullet fired by the villain grazes Watson in the leg. Here’s how Holmes reacts:

“You’re not hurt, Watson? For God’s sake, say that you are not hurt!”...The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain.... His face set like flint as he glared at our prisoner, who was sitting up with a dazed face. “By the Lord, it is as well for you. If you had killed Watson, you would not have got out of this room alive.”

Dorinda shows us three possible sequels to that moment, “one of sorrow, one of suffering, and one of joy.”

I just wanted to say that I'm really enjoying your Sherlock Holmes recommendations this month! They've been of a uniformly great quality, and this one is no exception. I even liked the Quantum Leap crossover, and I didn't even watch that show!

That crossover is the first and thus far only QL slash fic I’ve read. I would imagine that’s a fandom awash in crossover fics, because it’s pretty much the basic premise of the show: every episode Sam finds himself inhabiting yet another person’s life and trying to figure out what the heck he’s supposed to do, while Al snarks from the sidelines.
