Why this must be read:
The boy laughs, shaking his head. "Dude, really, Sir? What, do I actually look like my dad?" He ponders his own question for a moment, before shaking his head. "No, nope. Yeah, I'm a dashing man and all that, but no, my dad is really different from me. I got my curls from his side, though." He pauses, and Ryan wonders how many words he can say without a breath. "I'm Seth. Just, Seth."
This is a AU, from pre-pilot. It was written for a "different meetings" challenge, which I always dig because I like seeing the subtle changes in characters that can come from the changing of just one event. In this case, Ryan has a job as a waiter for a catering service that is hired in Newport, and lo and behold, who does he meet while he's working but one Seth Cohen.
It's an interestingly positive spin on a couple of key events from the first few episodes. Ryan beats up Luke, but Sandy and Kirsten see it as defence, not aggression. Ryan works in Chino, and Seth comes down to see him. Ryan moves in at the invitation of Seth, not because he's Sandy's hard-luck case. I like this, not in comparison with the way thing actually happened, but as sort of a divergent, brighter path. It's worth the read, anyway. Good characterisation on all ends.
