X-Men Movieverse Overview
Written by Devil Doll, a comicverse *and* movieverse fan.
The X-Men movies are based on the X-Men comic universe, in which mutants, people born with special powers (and sometimes an unusual appearance), are struggling to find their place in a society that hates and fears them. Because movie canon consists of a mere five hours of material, it is generally assumed that many details, such as character origin stories, are similar to those in the comic universe, even if we do not see it onscreen. There are a few differences between comicverse and movieverse canon, but most writers and readers are pretty open to the use of comic elements in fic.
Contains spoilers for all three movies.
Characters with several actors listed were played by different people in each movie.

Name: Wolverine/Logan (Hugh Jackman)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3, about 6 billion fan fics
Powers: Enhanced senses, healing factor, major sex appeal. Adamantium-reinforced skeleton and claws, courtesy of a shadowy gubment agency that experimented on mutants.
What You Should Know: Like his comic counterpart, little is known of Wolverine, except that he's been wandering around Canada, fighting people for money, and living in a camper that has seen better days. He can't remember anything about his life before fifteen years ago, and has a pretty big chip on his shoulder about that. He picks up a runaway Rogue in the first movie, and their adventures with Xavier and Co. are the audience's introduction to the world of the X-Men. He learned a little about his past in X2, and was forced to kill Jean Grey/Phoenix in X3.

Name: Professor X/Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3, Star Trek…oh, wait…
Powers: Telepathy, buckets of money.
What You Should Know: Xavier lives in a big fancy house that doubles as the headquarters for the X-Men. He is one of the world's most powerful telepaths, and dedicated to the belief that mutants and humans can co-exist. He at one time had a close friendship with Magneto, but they have since gone their separate ways due to differing beliefs on the mutant/human issue. Was "killed" by Jean Grey/Phoenix in X3, and his consciousness is currently residing in the body of another man.

Name: Magneto/Erik Lensherr (Sir Ian McKellen)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Can manipulate metal and magnetic fields. Looks fabulous in purple.
What You Should Know: Magneto's experiences in a Nazi concentration camp have made him determined to spare mutants a similar fate. He's also a snarky bitch, and we love him for it. He is the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants, which in the first movie consists of Mystique, Sabretooth, and Toad. By X2 it appears he's down to just Mystique, but the ranks grow considerably in X3, when he forms his own army of mutants to put a stop to the mutant "cure." Was temporarily depowered in X3.

Name: Dr. Jean Grey (Famke Janssen)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Telepathy, telekinesis. Enduring rampant character assassination at the hands of badfic writers.
What You Should Know: One of Xavier's first students, Jean was dating Scott Summers until she died/he died/she died again. Logan has the hots for her. She died saving the rest of the X-Men in X2, then came back as Phoenix in X3, at which point she killed Scott, Xavier, and whole bunch of other people before Logan killed her at the end of the movie.

Name: Cyclops/Scott Summers (James Marsden)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3 (for about ten minutes)
Powers: Optic blasts, cheekbones.
What You Should Know: Leader of the X-Men. We think. That's never been expressly stated in movie canon. Scott Summers' eye beams are a concussive force that produce no heat or flame, despite what the numerous fires he's started with them in fanfic would suggest. He has no control over his eye beams without special glasses made of ruby quartz. A distraught Scott went back to Alkalai Lake at the beginning of X3, where he found Jean alive and well. Their reunion was short, and ended with his death. Bye bye, Cyke.

Name: Storm/Ororo Munroe (Halle Berry)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Weather manipulation.
What You Should Know: Storm in the comics is a serene yet powerful goddess who can unleash hell by controlling the weather. Storm in the movie is...not quite that, but she tries. After Jean and Scott are out of commission in X3, Storm becomes the leader of the X-Men. She gives a lot of speeches.

Name: Rogue/Marie (Anna Paquin)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Life force and mutant power absorption via skin to skin contact.
What You Should Know: Much younger than her comic counterpart, and lacking some of her comic powers, Movie!Rogue is a teenage girl who leaves home after her mutation manifests. She has a close bond with Wolverine, and is currently dating Iceman. She took the cure in X3 and is assumed to be powerless at this point.

Name: Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Shapeshifter, enhanced strength, and one kick-ass fighter.
What You Should Know: Covered with scales and little else, Mystique is a shape-shifter who may or may not be doing the deed with Magneto. She's an accomplished fighter and computer hacker, and spends the time between X1 and X2 impersonating Senator Kelly. In X3, she was captured, and accidentally cured of her mutation during a rescue attempt by Magneto, at which point he kicked her ass to the curb. As a result, she betrayed him to the government. Current status unknown.

Name: Iceman/Bobby Drake (Shawn Ashmore)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Creation and manipulation of ice. Horniness in the face of life sucking skin.
What You Should Know: Movie!Bobby is a teenager, one of the students at Xavier's school. Like Comic!Bobby, he can create and manipulate ice, though appears to lack the ability to take on an all-ice form. Currently dating Rogue.

Name: Pyro/John Allerdyce (Alex Burton/Aaron Stanford)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Manipulation of fire.
What You Should Know: Pyro cannot create fire, but can control it once he has it. John's the bad boy to Bobby's good boy, and in X2 he defects to join Magneto. Was in X3 as one of Magneto's army, and is presumed to have gotten away alive at the end.

Name: Peter Rasputin/Colossus (Daniel Cudmore)
Appearances: X2, X3
Powers: Enhanced strength, can convert to invulnerable organic steel. Hugeness.
What You Should Know: Colossus made a cameo during X2 that left us all wanting more, and we did get a little more in X3, including the famous "Fastball Special" in which he tosses Wolverine at the bad guys.

Name: Kitty Pryde (Sumela Kay/Katie Stuart/Ellen Page)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Can phase through solid objects.
What You Should Know: Kitty was not only played by a different actress in X2, she looked considerably younger, and then older again in X3 when she was played by yet *another* actress. Kitty had a sizeable role in X3, including a not-quite flirtation with Iceman, and kicking Juggernaut's ass. In most early movieverse fan fic she is close friends with Rogue and Jubilee, though has been known to be the other woman who breaks up Rogue and Gambit.

Name: Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast (Kelsey Grammer)
Appearances: X2, X3
Powers: Strength, agility, smarts.
What You Should Know: Hank, though having the outward appearance of an animal, complete with claws, blue fur, and fangs, is extremely intelligent and very civilized. His cameo in X2 was presumably in his image-induced form, though in X3 he is working for the government in Mutant Relations and appears openly in his blue, furry form. After joining the X-Men to fight Magneto's army, at the end of X3 he was appointed to some kind of ambassador position. In early movieverse fic he is often the guy who figures out a way for Rogue to touch Logan, or figures out *why* Rogue can suddenly touch Logan.

Name: Warren Worthington III/Angel
Appearances: X3
Powers: Superior strength and speed, hollow bone structure and feathered wings allow him to fly, and recently a healing power that heals him and anyone with a compatible blood type.
What You Should Know: One of the original X-Men in the comics, Warren has only a small part in X3. His father, horrified by Warren's mutation, uses his huge fortune to invent a "cure." Unfortunately, Warren does not want to be cured, and heruns flies away from home and ends up at Xavier's.

Name: Callisto (Dania Ramirez)
Appearances: X3
Powers: Superspeed, can sense other mutants. Bondage gear wardrobe.
What You Should Know: Callisto joins up with Magneto in X3 and helps him locate both Mystique and Jean Grey. Was killed by Storm.

Name: Cain Marko/Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones)
Appearances: X3
Powers: Unstoppable once he gets moving. Bad quips.
What You Should Know: Contrary to comic canon, movie Juggernaut is a mutant, and no mention is made of him being related to Xavier. In X3, he is recruited by Magneto and is eventually defeated by Kitty Pryde and Leech.

Name: Sabretooth (Tyler Mane)
Appearances: X1
Powers: Supa strength, healing. Sadistic streak.
What You Should Know: A big blond goon for Magneto, Sabretooth appears to know who Logan is, and dislikes him immensely. Strangely absent in X2 and X3 (AKA "It wasn't in the budget").

Name: Toad (Ray Park)
Appearances: X1
Powers: Prehensile tongue. Leaping long distances. Warts.
What You Should Know: Another Magneto goon. Toad has a long, sticky tongue, and almost all movieverse NC-17 fic I've seen about him puts it to use during the naughty parts. Also strangely absent in X2 and X3.

Name: Senator Robert Kelly (Bruce Davison)
Appearances: X1, X2
Powers: None.
What You Should Know: The Senator is a staunch supporter of the Mutant Registration Act, because he believes mutants are dangerous. Then he becomes one--the first human made into a mutant with Magneto's Evol Spirograph of Doom. Like that isn't bad enough, the poor guy dies with no one but Halle Berry to keep him company. After his death in X1, Mystique takes his place and uses his position to not only fight for mutant rights, but to gain access to the imprisoned Magneto.

Name: Yuriko Oyama (Kelly Hu)
Appearances: X2
Powers: Healing factor, adamantium fingernails.
What You Should Know: Known as Lady Deathstrike in the comics, in the movies she is Stryker's pet project. Stryker controls her with his brainwashing juice. Killed by Logan in X2

Name: William Stryker (Brian Cox)
Appearances: X2
Powers: No mutant powers, but has extensive governmental authority and what appears to be command of black ops units with unlimited budgets.
What You Should Know: In charge of a project that experiments on mutants (assumed to be based on the Weapon X project of the comics, though it is never called that in the movies). His son Jason is a mutant, and a former Xavier student, and that appears to have made Stryker a very bitter man. Also killed in X2.

Name: Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming)
Appearances: X2
Powers: Teleportation, agility, prehensile tail. Ability to coax a credible performance out of Halle Berry.
What You Should Know: Nightcrawler's life with the Munich circus comes to an end when he's captured by the Weapon X program, brainwashed by Stryker, and sent to kill the President so Stryker can justify cracking down on mutants. He's very religious, lacks the fur of his comic counterpart, and appears to be a cutter. Absent from X3 with no explanation, unless you want to buy the video game to find out where he went. No, really. They put it in the video game, but not the movie.

Name: Mutant 143/Jason (Michael Reid MacKay)
Appearances: X2
Powers: Psionic illusions. "Ew" factor.
What You Should Know: Stryker's son, this character is loosely based on the comic mutant Mastermind. His father uses his cerebral fluid to create a magic brainwashing potion, which seems extremely unsanitary.
Name: Leech (Cameron Bright)
Appearances: X3
Powers: Supresses other mutant powers. Cue ball head.
What You Should Know: In X3, Ol' Man Worthington uses Leech's powers as the basis for his "cure" for mutants.
Name: Jubilation Lee/Jubilee (Katrina Florece/Kea Wong)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Pyrotechnic plasmoids AKA fireworks.
What You Should Know: An Xavier student who can blow things up, she has cameos in both movies. In fan fic, she is often portrayed as Rogue's best friend, along with Kitty Pryde. Jubilee often plays a matchmaker role in W/R stories.
Name: Remy LeBeau/Gambit
Powers: Can charge objects with explosive kinetic energy, agility, charm power.
What You Should Know: Rogue's on-again-off-again boyfriend in the comics, Gambit's rumored cameo in X2 was reduced to his name appearing on Stryker's computer screen. Often written with a terrible accent and referring to himself in the third person, Gambit is usually included in movieverse fic as a former/potential/current boyfriend to Rogue, and is commonly written as a slutty scumbag.

Scott/Jean
This pair seems to suffer the fate of canon couples in many fandoms, where established, reasonably happy couples don't generate much fic, thought her death in X2 did prompt a spate of Grieving!Scott fics. A lot of the fanfic from the first movie dealt with the Logan factor. Theirloveissoalreadycanon!
Rogue/Bobby
They seem to suffer the same fate as Scott/Jean, though some find the "no touching" angst inspirational. Theirloveissotragic!
Logan/Jean
The first movie did spawn some L/J shippers, though probably not as many as it would have if more time had been spent on the L/J/S triangle. Second film L/J seems to consist mostly of Logan grieving over what wouldn't have been even if she had lived, because she shot him down before she died. Then she came back, and he killed her. Theirloveissooverbeforeitbegan!
Xavier/Magneto
Close friends (or lovers, depending on your beliefs), now sworn enemies, it takes more than political differences to sever their ties for good. Interestingly, this 'ship is treated as near canon even in fanfics that have little or nothing to do with the characters. If Chuck gets mentioned in the story, odds are there'll be a nod to his doomed romance with Erik. Theirloveissotragicallysymbolic!
Logan/Rogue
The surprise pairing of the first movie. When he gave her his beat up dogtag and promised to come back, fangirls swooned. Theirloveissocontroversial!
Logan/Ororo
They had little chemistry or interaction in the movies, but they're both pretty, single adults, so...
Logan/Mystique
Mystique is sometimes herself, sometimes Jean or Rogue. Logan sometimes knows it's her, and sometimes does not. Made nearly canon by the tent scene in X2. Usually portrayed as two people just fucking to fuck. Theirloveissomeaningless!
Logan/Scott
Alpha males fighting over a female? The only way to resolve it is The Homosex! A fairly popular slash pairing following the first movie. After the second movie it took on an angsty grief/comfort tone. Theirloveissofullofalphamaletensionandorgrief!
Logan/Bobby
They both want Rogue, or one of them wants Rogue and the other one wants the other one. Or they both want each other, and it's okay because then they can have sex and still pretend they want Rogue so she won't feel bad. Or something.
Logan/Pyro
There was a little bit of this after the second movie, even though Pyro left the X-Men to join the Brotherhood and is assumed to not be around after the events of X2. TheirloveissoAU!
Bobby/John
This was the Hot Pairing after X2, but most people seem to have cooled on it rather quickly. No puns intended there. Honest. Theirloveispuntastic!
Bobby/John/Marie
If you couldn't touch your boyfriend, wouldn't you at least want to watch him have The Homosex with his best friend? TheirloveissoOT3!
Magneto/Mystique
They may be doing it, though she may look like Xavier when they do. Otherwise, they appear to behave like bitchy girlfriends. Theirloveissosnarky!
Logan/Sabretooth
They could only hate each other this much because they *really* want each other. Theirloveissogrowly!
Scott/Ororo
Seen now and then, though no real basis for it in the film. Often used as a way to remove Jean from the picture entirely.
Scott/Rogue
This ship is often the companion to Logan/Jean--the losers shack up together. Theirloveissobydefault!
Kurt/Ororo
Another ship that started strong after X2, but then seemed to fade away. Theirloveissolastsummer!
Mystique as herself/any other male or female character
Mystique as herself is rare, but it happens. She's popular in femslash from what I've seen.
Mystique as any other male or female character/any other male or female character
The possibilities for smut are endless! She's the Wild Card in the X-Men Uno deck!
Pyro/Magneto, Pyro/Rogue, Pyro/Mystique, Kurt/Bobby, Kurt/Rogue, Kurt/Logan, Logan/Toad, Bobby/John/Logan, Bobby/John/Logan/Scott, Logan/Yuriko, Yuriko/Stryker

Cameo Characters Often Appearing In Fic
Name: Jubilation Lee/Jubilee (Katrina Florece/Kea Wong)
Appearances: X1, X2, X3
Powers: Pyrotechnic plasmoids AKA fireworks.
What You Should Know: An Xavier student who can blow things up, she has cameos in both movies. In fan fic, she is often portrayed as Rogue's best friend, along with Kitty Pryde. Jubilee often plays a matchmaker role in W/R stories.
Non-Movie Characters Often Appearing In Fic
Name: Remy LeBeau/Gambit
Powers: Can charge objects with explosive kinetic energy, agility, charm power.
What You Should Know: Rogue's on-again-off-again boyfriend in the comics, Gambit's rumored cameo in X2 was reduced to his name appearing on Stryker's computer screen. Often written with a terrible accent and referring to himself in the third person, Gambit is usually included in movieverse fic as a former/potential/current boyfriend to Rogue, and is commonly written as a slutty scumbag.

Canon Pairings
Non-Canon Pairings
Other Pairings
Pyro/Magneto, Pyro/Rogue, Pyro/Mystique, Kurt/Bobby, Kurt/Rogue, Kurt/Logan, Logan/Toad, Bobby/John/Logan, Bobby/John/Logan/Scott, Logan/Yuriko, Yuriko/Stryker

Excellent!
I know. How odd is it that the person who wrote the overview hasn't written in the fandom for years, and the first other reccer has an (I agree, undeserved) reputation for being anti-comicverse ...?
*nods* It was kind of funny, but also kind of a bummer, that more people aren't interested in that fandom.
Of course, having just spent several weeks trying to track down the stories I wanted to rec, I'm thinking there is a wisdom in not volunteering. Heh.
Must encourage more comicverse people to help out when I'm done.
Yes! Because I doubt my nagging would do any good at all.

It may be that many of the X-Men comicverse types aren't very multifannish, and therefore not hanging out on Crack Van in order to know that they're need. Still worrying, though.

I already have a bit of a list, which is probably just as well given that I'll end up with December and it's such a busy month.

I'm sure I can con someone into taking over from me when I'm done. Via blackmail if all else fails *g*.
