DS9: Halfway, by Ariana (R)

Hullo, I'm Sab. I'll be driving the multi-Trek recs van this month, with a bias toward DS9 fic as that's where my primary Trekkish passion lies. In DS9, you'll see a lot of Kira/Dukat, with a smattering of Garak/Bashir and quite possibly some cross-Cardassian slashification. In VOY, I'll probably toss a Janeway/7 or two at you, as well as at least one Janeway/Janeway you will all enjoy lustily. Maybe some Paris/Kim, maybe not, and maybe, just maybe a good old-fashioned TNG Picard/Crusher or some good old-fashioned Picard/Q if I'm feeling sentimental.

Now!

Fandom: Star Trek: DS9
Pairing: Kira/Dukat
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ariana_paris
Author website: Cardassian Romances

Why this must be read:

I read this story back in 1997, when the Internet was all text-y and boxy and fandom was young and no one had ever heard of Ashlee Simpson or Ashton Kutcher. Now, two-thirds of a decade later, I still maintain that Ariana is the best of all the Trek authors, and that "Halfway" is the best Kira/Dukat story on the whole wide 'net.

Picture it. "Return to Grace," returning home from rescuing Ziyal from the Breen prison, Kira and Dukat, for the first time, discovering that they can work together, that they work well together, that Dukat can make Kira smile and Kira can make Dukat purr with bliss. And that's canon.

Ariana picks up where the episode leaves off, on the stolen Klingon ship on the way home, two lost soldiers who are never happier than when they're fighting battles, bouncing off the walls and bouncing off each other during one long night of spaceflight.

Brilliant, sexy, clever, funny, and written with Ariana's patented multi-lingual lyricism -- Kira and Dukat struggle to communicate in both Bajoran and Cardassian, even a little Klingon, and learn more about one another in fewer words than you'd expect, considering the players involved.

This is long, ambling, enthralling and very, very satisfying. Here, share:

He realised he had been silent for a while longer than usual, and
shook himself out of his reverie. He swallowed hard to chase the
memory. Life was seldom fair, and there was no point lamenting things
past. What really mattered was to seize the moment -- though this was
possibly not the moment to seize Kira.

"Oh, I was just thinking... as I sometimes do," he added to keep
the conversation shallow enough for comfort.

"Really?"

"Major, do you realise that is actually the third time you have
said 'Really?' since we began this conversation?"

She spread her hands in helplessness. "What can I say? I don't have your talent for making grandiose
speeches at the slightest provocation."

"I don't think I have been making so many speeches tonight," he
said defensively, well aware of her opinion of his verbosity.

"Well, no, but then maybe speaking Bajoran is cramping your
style."

"It has been a while," he admitted. Whenever there was a universal
translator available, he naturally used his native Kardasi to express
himself.

She was silent for a moment, possibly debating as to the
advisability of saying what she said next. "Actually, your Bajoran is quite good."

"Hmm," he responded, waiting to hear if there was a catch to this
praise. He could hear a considerable difference between his own
uneven accent and her Dakhur drawl, and felt a little self-conscious
about conducting a conversation in which, by essence, he couldn't
have the full advantage. As it was, it was lucky the major was a
little on the laconic side herself, or she could have dominated the
situation quite easily. Still, he had been able to find words and
construct sentences to his own satisfaction, which made him feel a
bit better about making himself so open to her linguistic criticism.

"Though it is a bit strange," she added. "You have some sort of a
regional accent."

"Yes," he said quickly. "A Cardassian one..." He realised they had
reached the sickbay, which was not very far from his quarters, and
stopped. "Major, would you care to continue this conversation
somewhere else?"

Any bribes we can offer to get the Paris/Kim? ;)

Ah, good memories. I absolutely agree that this is the best Kira/Dukat story around, but my inner nitpicker would like to point out that Return to Grace is not the episode in which Kira and Dukat rescue Ziyal from Breen prison. They do this in the earlier Indiscretion. Return to Grace starts with a Dukat who has been demoted and become persona non grata in upper Cardassian circles due to bringing Ziyal with him, and hence is reduced to freighter duty (he's supposed to bring Kira to a conference, and that's where they encounter the Klingons, etc.).

Now, I feel torn. I love it, but I also know [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge wanted to have a winn icon for Christmas because she has not a single one yet - can I share?

Who am I to refuse an offer like that? Caps sent.

I don't have your gmail address - is it just the same as the other, only with gmail?

Thank you! It's a beautiful icon. And a month of K/Du is just what I need to make me happy at this point in my DS9 watching. I'm really looking forward to all your recs.

Oh goody! I had practically forgotten the passion I had for Kira/Dukat back when DS9 was on. I'm so far out of Trek fandom I wouldn't even know where to look for stories, so I'm looking forward to the rest of your recs!
