Borrowed Time by Beth and Mystic Whim (R?)
Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Author on LJ: Not that I can find
Author Website: The Pits Archive
Why this must be read: I thought, after all the short and sweet fics, I should try archiving a longer length one. And I stumbled across Borrowed Time in my search. I felt this was very powerful, and, while it was painful to read at times, I loved the boys for their strengths, and weaknesses. I’ve never had to see someone suffering from cancer first hand, so I have no idea if everything is accurate, but … it felt like it to me, from what little I know.
This is very angsty, and takes a while to read, but I feel so much richer for having read it. It gets a little serious and, not exactly soapy, but sentimental at times, but it really makes you think and understand what people are saying and why. The partnership is so strong throughout and it’s empowering to think of people like Starsky and Hutch battling on, and with smiles on their faces.
There are quite a lot of characters compared to some fics, but each character is an individual, and no less important and real. If I had the time tonight, I would read it properly again, but I don’t, so I hope I’ve found the best excerpt I can from my skim through. :) I know what I’ll be doing first thing tomorrow, though.
Excerpt:
The doctor handed the pamphlets and business card to Hutch. "They'll see you Friday, 7:30 a.m. I'll have my secretary forward your records over immediately." Hutch nodded his assent. "I'm sorry I don't have better news for you, Ken."
After glancing at the information, Hutch tucked the brochures into his inside coat pocket, and rose to thank his doctor. Seeing the sympathy and sadness in the other man's face, Hutch had trouble meeting his eyes. He quickly said his goodbyes and left the office, dazed by the unexpected news that he had been presented with.
Hutch slid into the front seat of his Olds. As he tried to put the keys into the ignition, he stopped, staring at his now trembling hand. He let the hand drop to his lap.
How am I ever gonna tell Starsky?
