Internal Affairs by Beth H. (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Author on LJ:
bethbethbeth
Author Website: Madwoman in the Basement
Why this must be read:
I tend to like future fics, and this is a good example of a future dS story not set in Canada. This story is on the angsty side, so I think some people might have overlooked the fine RayK POV and canon feel of the casework. Fraser is very Fraser-like in this story. Inveterate Vecchio fans might have skipped this one, too, and I would say to them to try to view this as an AU and give the story a chance (in this fic, RayK goes undercover to investigate Vecchio). "Internal Affairs" feels emotionally true to me, even if it's not light and fluffy. Part of the appeal of canon due South is that dance between comedy and drama, and this story illustrates how duty places a heavy burden on the honorable. Also, there are a number of long, plotty stories in this fandom, but not so many get the feel of a cop's life right.

And can I just say in my defense (vis a vis Vecchio) that I've been wracked with Vecchio-related guilt ever since posting this years ago because honestly? I don't really see Vecchio this way.
RayK did, however. *g*
(...and if the "90K and sitting like a lump" companion-piece/sequel ever *stops* sitting like a lump and finishes itself, Vecchio's going to come across as a far better guy than he did in this story)
*drive by feedback*
Beth, I love your stories. :-) I really do. Even this one. *lol*
But especially Q&A and Unplanned. Thank you for writing them. :-)
Re: *drive by feedback*
Thank *you* for your kind words (...and by the way, those two stories are two of my favorites, as well!)

Hmm, yes, I agree. But it was a very good story and an interesting idea. Although it made me go ::wibble::. I would be very sad indeed if it were not for Dief (and might I just add that I fangirl you for using him in a non cardboard/stereotypical kind of way, and for not ignoring him?).
