Why this must be read:
Well, I gave you a happy rec last time, so I thought I'd challenge you with a somber story that will make you reflect on the compromises necessary to maintain a relationship over the years. Anyone who's been married as long as I have (18 years) will know this from personal experience, as will anyone partnered with someone different enough in some way to challenge one's sense of self and expectations about life.
Part of Hth's What It Is I See In You series (which can be found here, this story can be read as a stand-alone established relationship story. In it, we see the Kowalski family through Vecchio's eyes. This is the promised holiday rec; there are several other stories I could have selected (listed here in my journal), but this one had the most depth, so it got the nod.
