Why this must be read:
Here is my first rec in the much-maligned genre of m-preg (male pregnancy). IMHO, it actually works in Smallville, because Hello! Alien in the mix! Anyway, I love the stuff, and here's one of my absolute favorite SV fics ever, m-preg or not.
I was absolutely addicted to this story when it was a WiP and avidly looked forward to each new installment; the story just seemed to get better and better each week. I admit, I like m-preg (which was a bit of a surprise to me when I discovered it, but oh well), and Dayspring is a wonderful writer with a great perspective on the whole phenomenon. What I particularly like about her take on m-preg is Lex's realistic reaction to learning he's pregnant. He doesn't immediately go into misty-eyed mommy mode; he is justifiably freaking out over the whole situation. He has every right to be a little angry and bitter. Could his life get any weirder? And the health risk issue is well-done as well. A trouble-free pregnancy is hardly guaranteed for a woman, let alone a man.
This story has many great moments: Clark's near-death experience and the miscarriage scare. What a cliffhanger that was. The tension, the melodrama (and I mean that in the best possible way since I *adore* melodrama) hit pretty much every one of my buttons. Another great element is Bruce Wayne's friendship with Lex. Bruce’s visit to Lex's hospital room leads to a very interesting discussing of sanity and the lack thereof. I really love Dayspring’s insight into Lex. So well-thought-out and detailed. This whole work sort of qualifies as an in-depth psychological study of Lex. It starts from the premise that Lex is probably clinically insane. But his particular type of insanity may be his salvation since it gives him the mental strength to survive where others might simply give up. He is one of the most self-aware characters I have ever encountered in fiction.
I also really enjoy the pacing of this story. It reaches epic proportions, with over 30 chapters. That’s because Dayspring takes the time to really flesh out the details. She carefully explores every aspect of male pregancy and its impact. This means that we get to see it from many perspectives: Lex, Clark, Martha, Jonathan, Lionel, Chloe, the plant workers, and the castle employees. What is happening to Lex's body? What's it like for Clark to be a teen father? What does it really mean to have Lex out of commission for such an extended period of time? This is a a wonderfully thorough and emotionally satisfying story.
