Why this must be read:
And now, after all the angsty stories I’ve recommended, it’s time for something a bit more lighthearted. Jesmihr does stories in a variety of moods, from romance to humor to more serious themes.
In “Personal Effects”, the Edinian people, grateful for Spock’s help in repairing their computer system, present him with a gift: an android. A fully functional android.
Kirk assumes Spock will react to this gift with either embarrassment or distaste. Kirk assumes Spock is going to return it right away.
Kirk assumes wrong. Spock is quite fascinated with his new mechanical toy. And Kirk – suddenly, ferociously jealous - can’t stop thinking about what Spock and the android might be doing in the privacy of Spock’s quarters.
I love the humor in this piece – humor which is beautifully balanced by the unexpressed longing both men feel for each other but have not, as yet, been able to communicate.
