Fake News (The Daily Show/The Colbert Report) RPF Overview
I'm
sailtonorway and I will be your Fake News RPF driver this month. There have been various correspondents over the course of The Daily Show, but I'll only be talking about the ones featured in fic.
THE PREMISE
The Daily Show premiered in 1996, with Craig Kilborn as the host. Jon Stewart replaced him in 1999 after Kilborn left to do The Late Show. The show consists of various correspondents who are playing altered versions of themselves, usually ignorant and idiotic. It is presented in a news format with their own spin. Stephen Colbert, a correspondent of TDS, got his own show in 2005 called "The Colbert Report (pronounced 'repor' - silent T)" which emulates a lot like Bill O'Reilly's show. The Colbert Report has no correspondents, but does feature the staff behind the scenes such as Bobby the Stage Manager (Eric Drysdale), Meg the intern, Killer, Tad the Building Manager (Paul Dinello), etc.
THE PEOPLE
JON STEWART
Jon Stewart is a comedian, writer, satirist, producer and actor. His former name was Jon Stuart Leibowitz. He's done stand up and hosted various shows on MTV. Stewart grew up in New Jersey, came from a Jewish background and was a smoker since age fifteen. He went to the College of William and Mary and got a degree in psychology. He is married to Tracey McShane, has two kids named Nathan and Maggie. Jon doesn't wear a ring on his finger, however. He is honest, calls people on their bullshit, and deflects conversations into jokes. Jon is also known for appearing on Tucker Carlson's show "Crossfire" in 2004, where he criticized his show and called Carlson a dick.
STEPHEN COLBERT
Stephen Colbert is a comedian, writer, actor, satirist, a former presidential candidate and the youngest of eleven children. Stephen's father and two brothers, Peter and Paul, died in a plane crash, so his family moved to Charleston, South Carolina. In high school, he found the transition difficult and became unmotivated, but found joy in Dungeons and Dragons & Lord of the Rings. He originally wanted to be an actor, studied in theater at Northwestern University but discovered improv when he did Second City in 1988. There, he met Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris and became an understudy for Steve Carell. Paul thought Stephen was "pretentious and cold"; Stephen thought Paul was an "illiterate thug." After being paired for an assignment for McDonalds, they became best friends and inseparable. Before and during the his work at The Daily Show, Stephen has worked with Paul and Amy in various projects such as Exit 57, Strangers with Candy and Wigfield. He has also collaborated with Steve Carell in The Ambiguously Gay Duo for SNL and The Dana Carvey Show.
In 2005, Stephen got his own show named The Colbert Report, using the same "Stephen" character. Jon and Stephen talk during 'the toss', where Jon checks in with Stephen via satellite in "The Daily Show". Stephen often combats Jon and tries to get him to break character. He released a book entitled "I Am America (And So Can You!)" earlier this year, written by the "Stephen" character.
Furthermore, Stephen is Catholic, teaches Sunday school and believes it is possible to "question the church and still be Catholic." He's married to Evelyn "Evie" McGee and has three kids named Madeline, Peter and John.
"STEPHEN" COLBERT
"Stephen" Colbert is the alter ego of Stephen Colbert. He is a "well-intentioned, poorly-informed, high-status idiot," who believes in truthiness ("what you want the facts to be, as opposed to what the facts are" according to Colbert in his 60 Minutes interview). His persona closely follows the real characteristics Stephen, like his Catholicism, science fiction geekiness and hometown, except for schooling in which "Stephen" attended Dartmouth. "Stephen" mocks the right-wing by being the right-wing. Charlene is an ex-girlfriend and possibly second cousin whom he still loves and she has a restraining order against "Stephen". He has repressed sexual urges, such as watching Fight Club on Friday nights for a Brad Pitt fix, and admitted being 233% gay due to the 'more brothers you have, the more likely you are to be gay' theory. Stephen officially announced he would run for president after being "pressured" by the public to do so. He ran for both the Republican and the Democratic nomination in South Carolina, and was denied a place in the ballot.
STEVE CARELL
Steve Carell is an actor and writer from Massachusetts. He currently plays Michael Scott in the US adaptation of The Office and has appeared in various films such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine. Steve is married to Nancy Walls, who he met through Second City, and they have two kids together named Elisabeth and John. He joined TDS in 1999 because Stephen brought him in. Steve did Produce Pete and Even Stephven segments. Even Stephven was a parody of Crossfire, where Stephen and Steve basically shout either "yes!" or "no!", and they present opposing sides of a certain topic. Steve has come back to TDS to promote his films, and in one of the tosses, "Stephen" admitted they did not speak off camera because of his yeast of hatred for him. Jon asked Steve, "Why did you leave us?" and Steve consoled him through hugging. In the 2007 Emmys, Jon and Stephen gave Steve Carell an Emmy meant for Ricky Gervais since Ricky was not present, resulting in an impromptu threeway hug onstage.
ROB CORDDRY
Rob Corddry is a comedian from Massachusetts who took over This Week in God for Stephen when he left for The Colbert Report. His catchphrase is "Oh, come on!". Rob isn't actually interested in politics and he likes crude humor. When Rob left TDS, he starred as the main character in The Winner. He has a wife named Sandra and a daughter.
ED HELMS
Ed Helms is a comedian and actor from Georgia, and is currently playing Andy Bernard in The Office (US). He went to Oberlin College in Ohio and likes to sing; even had an a cappella group named "The Oberlin Obertones." Ed is often mistaken with Stephen Colbert (probably because of the glasses?), but is geeky like him. He left TDS in 2006.
DEMETRI MARTIN
Demetri Martin is a comedian, writer, actor and musician from New Jersey. He dropped out from New York University School of Law a year before graduation to pursue comedy. Demetri occasionally appears on TDS for his segment, "Trendspotting," in which he talks about current trends among the youth such as MySpace. He frequently brings up Jon's age and out-of-touchness. Meanwhile, Demetri does stand up comedy and often uses deadpan one-liners in his acts.
JOHN OLIVER
John Oliver is a comedian from England. He graduated from Cambridge University where he studied English. Before joining TDS in 2006, John wrote and starred in three series of 'The Department' with Andy Zaltzman and worked as a stand up comedian in the UK. His Britishness comes up often in TDS, and is one of the only characters Jon ever actively pushes around.
PAUL DINELLO
Paul Dinello is an actor, writer, director and one of five children. He was born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois. Paul has worked on several independent films with his uncle, Dan Dinello. He has a dog of sixteen years named Cagney, who has appeared in many of Paul's films.
Paul and Amy dated for about eight years since they worked together in Second City, shortly lived together during the Exit 57 era and are still close friends now. He and Amy are currently working on a pilot for HBO. From fan reports, Paul is occasionally seen with Stephen after tapings of "The Colbert Report." Paul has appeared on TCR as "Tad the Building Manager", who "Stephen" wrestles and tumbles with offscreen.
AMY SEDARIS
Amy Sedaris is an actress, author and comedian from Raleigh, North Carolina. She is the younger sister of the famous author and humorist, David Sedaris; together, they are known as The Talent Family. Amy's attracted to unattractive things like fucked up teeth. She likes dressing up to get into character. She's a quirky and honest person, and often does the Jerri Blank faces and voice.
Other people mentioned in fic are Lewis Black (the angry one), Mo Rocca (the cute nerd), Rob Riggle (an ex-Marine), Larry Wilmore (the token black guy), Samantha Bee (caricatures her interviewees), Jason Jones (the cocky one).
And for other pundits not in the Fake News verse, but provide banter and general awesomeness:
ANDERSON COOPER
Anderson Cooper hosts Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN. He has appeared on TDS and gave Jon government cigarettes. Anderson has also been on TCR, teaching Stephen how to put emphasis on his words, made a quick cameo promoting Stephen's Americone Dream Ice Cream and his news special "Planet in Peril". Jon and Stephen sometimes mention Anderson on their shows. He doesn't mention his relationships in public to protect his neutrality as a journalist. Many people think he's gay, and has been seen with a man named Julio in public on various occasions.
KEITH OLBERMANN
Keith Olbermann hosts Countdown with Keith Olbermann and used to work at ESPN with Dan Patrick. He has an ongoing feud with Bill O'Reilly, criticizes the Bush Administration in 'Special Comment', mocks others and sometimes airs TDS/TCR clips in his show. Keith has appeared on TCR and mainly talked about Bill O'Reilly since "Stephen" admires him whereas Keith does not.
THE FANDOM
Jon/Stephen - In Indecision 2004, a very tired Stephen and Jon both grab the last piece of pizza simultaneously, leer at each other while bringing it to their mouths and take a bite at the same time. At the 2006 Emmys, Stephen kissed Jon on the cheek when "The Daily Show" won an award. Stephen once said in an interview, "As much as I want to make the audience laugh, I really want to make Jon laugh." Stephen is definitely the more dominant of the two, and even though he has his own show, he still looks at Jon as a boss.
Stephen/Paul - They've been best friends for two decades, have kissed in Exit 57 and played homosexual characters in a secret relationship in Strangers with Candy. They both see each other as complementing things the other doesn't have.
Ed/Rob - In an episode of TDS, Rob and Ed parody reality shows in which they got married at the end and kiss. Ed is often the quieter and more sensible one of the couple.
The Pundit Round Table - This features Jon, Stephen, Keith and Anderson who meet up at restaurants in NYC to hang out.
Other pairings written are Stephen/Anderson, Stephen/Keith, Stephen/Steve, Stephen/Ed, Stephen/Paul/Amy, Jon/Anderson, Jon/John, etc. As you can see, Stephen is paired with... everyone. He is really flexible (character-wise!) and has chemistry with anyone's personalities. Jane Fonda even kissed him in a TCR interview. He mentions fanfiction on his show sometimes, so he is pretty much encouraging it.

By the way, do you have a hi res for the first picture? Or do you know what the glass says?
Oh, and one more thing for the Jon/Stephen Fandom. I'd personally also include the 2003 Emmy Awards. Or maybe you didn't because there is disagreement over whether Jon kissed Stephen on stage? I guess it does look like he's just saying something in his ear, but after all this time I think it was a kiss (http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/emmy%2Bawards%2B2003/video/x2qxox_emmy-awards-2003-the-daily-show_fun).
