The Adventures of Mr Pipps by Inzevar (PG)

Fandom: HORNBLOWER
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: unknown

Why this must be read: Hello! I'm Nige and I'll be dealing Hornblower this month. My taste runs mainly towards Horatio/Archie, but I hope to bring a little variety in and so today I am reccing one of my favourite ever gen stories.

The Mr Pipps series is one of the funniest fics I have ever had the pleasure to read, and I return to it whenever I feel like a laugh. Inzevar hits her stride a third of the way into the first story and just doesn't let up from then on. The series is of the sort that delights in exploiting prevalent character cliches, but a lot of humour also lies in its pokes at 18th century life, and, especially, naval life. Marvel as Horatio thrashes Frogs, Dons, and the Mrs Bowles and Bracegirdle at the Naval Wives Whist Drive! Gasp in horror as Archie has fits of the Shakespeares! Wonder at the sheer amount of trouble Mr Pipps can cause! And will Captain Pellew ever have the most tastefully decorated Captain's cabin in the fleet?

"May I come with you Horatio?" Archie came running up eagerly, "do say yes!"

"Certainly Arch" said Horatio patting him fondly on the head "but you must be careful to stay calm. You know what happens when you get too excited."

"Yes Horatio" murmured Archie, "I'm sorry about last time. Did you get the stain out of your jacket yet?"

"Never mind that now. We must go and pull this poor devil out of the sea," said Horatio leaping heroically into the lowered boat. Archie followed him and they sat in the stern ready to cast off.

"I say," said Archie after a few moments, "do you think we should get some of the men to come along as well? They could do the rowing and we could steer and shout orders."

---

"Well you tell him, oh hell you know what to say Mr. Hornblower," he spluttered.

"Yes Sir." Horatio loved it when Sir Edward trusted him to be diplomatic. He squared his shoulders and drew himself up to his full height. "Senor, my captain thinks that you and the rest of your officers and indeed all the officers in the Spanish Navy are a bunch of effete, overdressed, nincompoops and he spits on your siesta."

The stories are in order: From Here to Profanity, Mr Pipps and the Prize Ship, Mr Pipps Saves the Day, Mr Pipps and the Examination for Lieutenant, and Mr Pipps Visits the Doctor.

Oh hurray! I want to second this rec immediately. The Mr Pipps series is one of the best humourous fics I've read in any fandom. Can't resist another quote:

"What are you doing Mathews?" said Horatio going scarlet with embarrassment, "I haven't done anything to cheer about!"

"Aye but you will soon won't you, Sir? Me and the lads just thought we'd save a bit of time and.."

"No! I forbid it! Just row the boat!"
