Rebuilding a Life by Settiai (NCIS/Doctor Who, PG-13)

Fandom: NCIS & Doctor Who
Pairing: Fitz Kreiner/ Tony DiNozzo (eventually and oh so adorably)
Length: 40,000 words
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] settiai
Author Website: settiai.com
Why this must be read: I'm not a huge fan of crossovers, to be honest. This story, however, is so rich in detail and weaves the time-lines between the two shows so accurately that it just makes complete sense so it doesn't actually feel like a crossover. (Gotta say if there is one show that can be crossed over with any other show, it's Doctor Who. [livejournal.com profile] settiai  does an amazing job of meshing the original series, the novels and the new series together nicely.) This story epic in scope, personal in nature and just a thoroughly enjoyable read from beginning to end. Make sure you've set aside plenty of time when you start it, because you won't want to put it down until you get to the end.

I don't think you need to have read the BBC novels to understand what's going on, even though the main character of this story is Fitz Kreiner, who traveled with The Doctor for about 50 of the 73 Eighth Doctors adventures in BBC novel form. The Doctor Who Wiki has a pretty nice article on Fitz. You can read it here if you're interested in learning a bit about him.

Anyway, I think even if you don't know Fitz when you start the story, you'll grow to adore him by the end. I think this is just a terrifically fun read for fans of NCIS and Doctor Who; bonus points for those of us who are fans of both.  It's only  the tiniest bit slashy; there's only a few kisses. Duh, Jack Harkness is in it. What else would you expect?

Here's a list of the characters you meet or hear stories about in the story:

Doctor Who (and Torchwood) Characters: Fitz Kreiner, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Second Doctor, Anji Kapoor, Donna Noble, Harriet Jones, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, The Master, Martha Jones, Rose Tyler, Sam Jones,Toshiko Sato, Trix MacMillan, Winifred Bambera, and a cameo appearance by the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith; vaguely spoilery mention of Ace McShane, Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, C'rizz, Charley Pollard, Clive Finch, Compassion, Gemma Griffin, Gwen Cooper, Henry van Statten, K-9, Jamie McCrimmon, Leela, Lucie Miller, Mickey Smith, Owen Harper, Romana I, Romana II, Romana III, Samson Griffin, and Zoe Herriot

NCIS Characters:
Abby Sciuto, Ducky Mallard, Jimmy Palmer, Kate Todd, Jeanne Benoit, Jenny Shepard, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Michelle Lee, TimMcGee, Tony DiNozzo, Ziva David; vaguely spoilery mention of Ari Haswari, Chip Sterling, Gerald Jackson, Mike Franks, Paula Cassidy, and Viv Blackadder

A bite-sized taste...

Shaking his head, Fitz turned and headed for the kitchen. Ducky was sitting at the table, sipping at his third cup of tea in an hour.

"I'm sure that Gibbs wouldn't kill you if you shared the bed," Fitz said, pulling out a chair to join Ducky.

Ducky smiled at him over his cup. "I doubt that I will be getting much sleep tonight," he said softly. "I'm afraid that every time I close my eyes I see young Mr. Palmer and Abigail standing at the edge of the roof."

"You too, huh?" Fitz asked, trying to keep his voice light. He doubted that he'd succeeded. "What did they say it was? Mass hypnosis or some such thing?"

Ducky snorted. It was a surprising sound, one that Fitz wasn't used to hearing. "More like alien influence." He gave Fitz a knowing look. "But I believe you already knew that much."

Fitz stared at him blankly, shock overriding everything else that was rushing through his mind. The last piece fell into the puzzle.

"You know the Doctor," Fitz said. He suddenly felt a little wobbly, and he was grateful that he was already sitting down.

Oh yes.

This is one of the most superb stories. One does not even NEED to know about Fitz, or even to a lesser degree NCIS or Dr Who and its related spin-offs because the writing is That Good. Truly bewitching tale and so glad it has been recced here.

It also references Man From UNCLE... blink and you miss it but ;)
