A Very Cold Case by sagestreet (PG)

Why this must be read:
This story is about the slow unraveling of a mystery. The clues are superb and touching and it accomplishes something that I wish more Sherlock fic would -- actually telling a compelling casefile while also giving us insight into the relationship of the lead characters. Read this story for the wonderful puzzle, brilliantly languid build towards emotional realization on the part of the characters, and the poetic prose.

Here is what I posted as feedback to the author of this story. Every word of what I said is true: This is, quite literally, one of the finest, most beautiful pieces of fiction I have ever read, let alone fanfiction. I am in awe of the way you have carefully crafted this story. It's so beautiful. It feels like a delicate, precious poem -- an ode to the mystery of love. I will be thinking about this story for a long time, I'm sure, and re-reading it often. The way you have of using the simplest, loveliest turns of phrase to craft this masterful story is (to steal your metaphor) like a grand symphony.

I cannot praise this enough. Imagine an opera house giving you a standing ovation, okay? That's how I feel about this story. I shall recommend it far and wide and throw petals of gratitude at your feet for writing and sharing this magnificent story which made me smile while it moved me to tears.

I'm sorry, but reading your feedback to the writer isn't giving me any idea as to the kind of fic this is... I get that you think it's amazing, but a few words in regards to what it's about would have been much appreciated.

While I found this story well written in some ways I feel any recommendation should come with the warning that it requires a fairly high tolerance for John being portrayed as being of somewhat less than average intelligence, education and worldliness. I don't think it was a particularly canonical portrayal of the character, which is a shame because the story itself was strong but the characterisation was not.

Thanks!
