12:00 am Hide & Seek by Luc Darling
Fandom: WAREHOUSE 13
Pairing: Gen. Leena, Myka, Pete, Claudia
Length: 1763
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] luc_darling

Why this must be read:

This cute little fic about playing hide and go seek in the warehouse will leave you giggling.  Pete locks himself into the Narnia wardrobe. A very Pete move I think we'll all agree. :)

“All right!” Pete exclaimed, grin spreading across his face. “This will be the best game of Hide & Seek in the history of ever!” He high-fived Claudia, who tipped an imaginary hat as it had been her idea. The duo looked pleadingly at Myka and Leena.

“Guys, I'm not sure this is what Artie had in mind when he said we should learn the Warehouse better,” Myka reminded them.

10:34 am Cloudy with a Chance of Connors by evenstar_estel (T)
Fandom: PRIMEVAL
Pairing: Abby/Connor
Length: 3,800
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] evenstar_estel
Author Website: None
Why this must be read: Every so often a story comes along that really captures people’s imaginations and inspires others to play in the same sandbox, exploring other possibilities inherent in the original, and this is one of those stories. Imagine multiple versions of Connor, all from different timelines, all arriving in the same place at the same time… yep, it’d be pretty chaotic! The characters created by [livejournal.com profile] evenstar_estel  have now been picked up by various different authors in the fandom to good effect, but this was the first, so take this opportunity to read and enjoy the one that started it all! I'll be reccing one of the spin-offs tomorrow.

Fandom: TRUEBLOOD
Pairing: Eric/Sookie
Length: 9,498
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] missnyah
Author Website: N/A

Why this must be read:

I feel that war fiction must be one of the hardest things to write, especially if it's about the people in it not the action. This is an AU where the pairing are the only two show characters in your attention, and is all the richer for it. She does such a fantastic job of nudging change into this blend of history and fiction that you don't begrudge a literal rather than happy ending. It's vivid and raw, towing your emotions along the whole way but ultimately satisfying.

Author's Words:

We're here because they volunteered. Sookie. Eric. 1969. Vietnam. Lemons. The draft.

04:08 pm Raffles Rescues a Rabbit by storyfan (R)
Fandom: RAFFLES
Pairing: A.J. Raffles/Bunny Manders, although technically gen
Length: approximately 6,300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] storyfan
Why this must be read:

Of the numerous stories [livejournal.com profile] storyfan has contributed to the fandom, this one tops as my favourite. She tackles the first meeting between the two young thieves-to-be in both a realistic and inventive way. I happen to know the amount of research she put into learning how British public schools worked back in the day, and what sort of things went on in them. It pays in spades, giving you a rather raw look that even Tom Brown's schooldays could not have admitted to.

Throughout their association, Raffles, despite his cold-heartedness, has a very protective streak. He treats Bunny as his equal, not his lessor. This story captures those traits perfectly. Also, I always thought Raffles likely had a hand in nicknaming Bunny. [livejournal.com profile] storyfan gives Raffles a very tender-hearted reason for the name, and it explains quite nicely why Bunny becomes wobbly in the knees every time Raffles uses his old school nickname.

07:50 pm They came, you know, and told me you were dead, by antisoppist (PG)
Fandom: Lord Peter Wimsey
Pairing: Harriet/Bunter
Length: 3200
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] antisoppist
Why this must be read:
I have just told you that this is a Harriet/Bunter fic. Do you need another reason?

Oh, all right then.

Considering that Harriet confessed on her wedding night that she loved Bunter, it’s taken a surprisingly long time for a fanfic in which she gets to go to bed with him. This is that fic, and happily it is utterly, magnificently worth waiting for. It’s an AU that posits that Peter did not come back from his overseas mission of the Wimsey Papers/Presumption of Death to live happily ever after with Harriet, but died leaving her a widow with two sons. And Bunter. It is sensitive, plausible, with spot-on characterisation, and very, very funny. Last December, [livejournal.com profile] azdak suggested that Wimseyfic fell into two catagories – more than, and more of. This fic does both.

Harriet propped herself on one elbow and contemplated the dark head on the pillow beside her. Dawn had not, as part of her mind had feared, brought regret and a sickening sense of “what have I done?” but peace, the memory of laughter and the absence of the heavy numbness that had weighed on her since Peter’s death. Waiting for Bunter to wake, she could only hope he felt the same way about it.

08:34 pm A Very Cold Case by sagestreet (PG)
Fandom: SHERLOCK
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: approximately 32,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sagestreet
Author Website: (or a link to where more of their fic is archived)
Why this must be read:
This story is about the slow unraveling of a mystery. The clues are superb and touching and it accomplishes something that I wish more Sherlock fic would -- actually telling a compelling casefile while also giving us insight into the relationship of the lead characters. Read this story for the wonderful puzzle, brilliantly languid build towards emotional realization on the part of the characters, and the poetic prose.

Here is what I posted as feedback to the author of this story. Every word of what I said is true: This is, quite literally, one of the finest, most beautiful pieces of fiction I have ever read, let alone fanfiction. I am in awe of the way you have carefully crafted this story. It's so beautiful. It feels like a delicate, precious poem -- an ode to the mystery of love. I will be thinking about this story for a long time, I'm sure, and re-reading it often. The way you have of using the simplest, loveliest turns of phrase to craft this masterful story is (to steal your metaphor) like a grand symphony.

I cannot praise this enough. Imagine an opera house giving you a standing ovation, okay? That's how I feel about this story. I shall recommend it far and wide and throw petals of gratitude at your feet for writing and sharing this magnificent story which made me smile while it moved me to tears.

08:54 pm How to Break a Guy who Doesn’t Care by Lady Awesomepants (K+)
Fandom: HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY
Pairing: Zaphod/Trillian, sort of
Length: 500
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: FFN profile
Why this must be read:

And now, some mood whiplash. Rather than concentrating on why Trillian doesn’t work, here’s a great example of why she does. This is either meant to be film!verse, or book!verse; I can’t quite tell (maybe it’s both. Who knows?), but either way it’s a great look at Zaphod’s mental state.

I do think, in an odd sort of way, Trillian and Zaphod did work really well together, up until Zaphod got all depressed about his ‘life’s mission’ being over. He is reckless and impulsive, which was exactly why Trillian walked away from Arthur, mid-conversation. She wants to be those things, but she can’t seem to do them on her own. She needs someone else to do them for her.

09:51 pm Skip The Sangria, by Jules (NC-17)
Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Aisha/Clay
Length: 768
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cidercupcakes
Author's Website: AO3

Why this must be read:
This is just all the right levels of filthy. Aisha and Clay and heat, the heat of the sun, the heat of alcohol, the heat of sex, and the heat of knowing you've met your match.

It's short and sweet and intense, with such vivid luscious images and sensations. You can feel the sunlight and heat on your face as you read this - or are you secretly blushing? All you know is that it's suddenly gotten hotter in here.

And it's got Aisha pegging Clay, which is just...hell, it's just awesome.

Excerpt:
Spain, and the windows and shutters were open because they'd just spent three weeks in the Pacific Northwest and now Aisha needed the goddamned sunlight. Spain, and the golden afternoon light fell in hot bright pools on the carpet and even the air was warm on her back, the sometimes-wind cooling as it met their sweat. But any work the breeze may have done was in vain, because they were fucking hard enough to keep themselves sweat-soaked, and as hot as the air was, Clay was even hotter around the fingers of her right hand.
