The Widening Gyre by etherati (R)
Fandom: WATCHMEN
Characters: Dan, Rorschach
Length: ~14k
Author on LJ:
etherati
Author's website: fic list
Why this must be read:
It's a ghost story set in a haunted house! I'm fairly sure everyone loves ghost stories.
Dan and Rorschach are completely out of their usual element, they're actually scared, and so their interaction is very candid. You get to see them reacting to some very freaky experiences, and it's touching for how they support each other as well as thrilling for that lovely "DON'T GO UP THE STAIRS" visceral effect.
The atmosphere in this fic is developed with a great deal of care, and the spookiness is pervasive because there is such a volume of detail in the descriptions. There's a strong sense of place from the start, and as the characters get closer to confronting the ghost the scares grow less atmospheric and a whole lot more tangible and violent. It's a really fun read, with an appropriately haunting ending.
