Fandom: VORKOSIVERSE Characters: Just about everyone Length: 118k words Author on LJ: lannamichaels Author Website: AO3Why this must be read:
The Vorkosiverse tends to spawn long, plotty, good AUs, but most of them branch off in the latter part of the series. This is one of the best, and it starts off before the series even starts. Aral was married before Cordelia, as a young man, but the marriage was childless and she died young (either suicide or murder); in this AU, it wasn't. Instead, Petya was born: heir to the Vorkosigans, related to the Vorrutyers, neglected by a father who was going through a really low point in his life and a pawn in the cesspool that was Vor politics before Serg died. If you're worried about OC's, don't be; Petya is a marvelously drawn person, fully as three-dimensional as any of Lois' own characters. I love Petya, and I love the perspective he gives on events we know of from canon. In many ways, he is a truer Vor than Miles could ever be, with his Betan mother and his physical handicaps. Fandom:STARSKY AND HUTCHPairing:starsky/hutchLength:nice and longAuthor on LJ:unknownAuthor Website:http://www.starskyhutcharchive.com/stories.php?genre=slash&zinet=latest&alpha=all&authname=r Why this must be read:This is a case story interwoven with the a confession and a discovery of Strasky and Hutch's sexual attraction for each other and then ultimately acknowledgment of their total love for each other. Realizing that Hutch would be willing to sit out here all night just to make his point, Starsky sighed deeply. "All right. I gave you every opportunity in the whole goddamn world to tell me about it when we were workin' on Blaine's murder. Think back . . . " His voice rose as he relived those days once again. "In fact, I made an ass of myself tryin' to get you to talk to me. All you did was go around makin' self-righteous speeches about how goddamned prejudiced everyone was." He curled back his lip. "Mister Holier-than-thou, right? You're real good at that game, Hutch. I was almost ready to believe I was wrong about you. Just like now. For some reason, I'm feelin guilty as hell because I didn't tell you I thought you were gay." He shook his head in bewilderment. Blinded by the Light

Fandom: STAR TREK:REBOOT Characters/Pairings: Kirk; Kirk/Spock Length: ~9500 Author on LJ: anowlinsunshine Author Website: Master Post
Why this must be read: Kirk takes a vacation, hits his head and forgets everything about who he is. No one around him know who he is either, and so while he waits for someone to come looking for him, he settles down a in a small coastal town and slowly rediscovers himself. I love amnesia fic, and I love 'big' characters forced to live a 'small' life, and this fic completely satisfies both of these desires. It's sweet and quiet and a little achy, and just perfect. Fandom: WATCHMENCharacters: Dan, Rorschach Length: ~14k Author on LJ: etheratiAuthor's website: fic listWhy this must be read:It's a ghost story set in a haunted house! I'm fairly sure everyone loves ghost stories. Dan and Rorschach are completely out of their usual element, they're actually scared, and so their interaction is very candid. You get to see them reacting to some very freaky experiences, and it's touching for how they support each other as well as thrilling for that lovely "DON'T GO UP THE STAIRS" visceral effect. The atmosphere in this fic is developed with a great deal of care, and the spookiness is pervasive because there is such a volume of detail in the descriptions. There's a strong sense of place from the start, and as the characters get closer to confronting the ghost the scares grow less atmospheric and a whole lot more tangible and violent. It's a really fun read, with an appropriately haunting ending. The Widening Gyre

Fandom: WATCHMENCharacters: Eddie/Rorschach, Dan Length: ~25k Author on LJ: findmyantidrugAuthor's website: fic listWhy this must be read:This is an AU where Rorschach gets drafted, goes to fight in Vietnam, and becomes the Comedian's protege in the school of being an efficient human death machine. It needs to be read because findmyantidrug is a sickeningly good writer, she'll make you feel like you're in the character's head, seeing what they're seeing, and you really don't want to be. She doesn't shy away at all from presenting gruesome images of war, or from allowing the Comedian to live up to his full capacity for amorality. There are parts that are very difficult to read, but Rorschach's perspective is human enough that only the war comes off as gratuitous, not the writing. Having Rorschach be the one who retains his humanity in a horrific situation is a really interesting diversion from the canon; it's done with immense skill, and the result is fascinating, shocking, and affective.
