"Starsky and Hutch": An Overview

Detective Sergeant David Michael Starsky—Played by Paul Michael Glaser.

He’s the curly-headed one. Left-handed, drove his 1974 Candy Apple Red Ford Torino (license plate number 537-ONN), and often drove Hutch to distraction. He also wore VERY tight jeans which made the viewing experience that much more pleasurable. Though concrete facts in the SH universe are often absent, his birth-date is often said to be the same as Paul himself, March 25, 1943. He was born in New York and his father was killed when he was very young (believed to be a cop). His mother (who is still alive and whom he calls every Friday) sent him away from the family (he has one brother named Nick) to live with his Uncle Al and Aunt Rosie in California. He may (or may not) have joined the Army, but we know he joined the Academy and that’s the beginning of the partnership with Hutch. His current rank is Detective Sergeant with the Bay City Police Department, serving under Captain Dobey. He and Hutch are best friends and like to show their devotion for one another, often by touching A LOT. Starsky often finds any way possible to unbutton his shirt down to mid-chest, so he shows off his chest hair. He uses a Smith & Wesson Model 59 9mm automatic, but is often referred to as a Baretta. His favorite snitch and all-around good friend is named Huggy Bear.

Kenneth Richard Hutchinson-Played by David Soul.

He’s the blond one. Right-handed, drove a horrid Ford LTD (license plate 573-CPE) that looked like it was condemned, but thankfully he mostly rode in the Torino. He came from money, fine Minnesota money. It’s not known about his family, but his mother is still alive during the series because he mentions her. He was once married to Vanessa, but they divorced and during the third season she is killed (we cried…joyful tears). In the pilot he mentions a Nancy, which may have been Vanessa’s nickname or may have been the first Mrs. Hutchinson. He may or may not have gone to medical school before he joined the Academy, but he sure knows a lot about medicine. He joined the Academy and that’s the beginning of the partnership with Starsky. His current rank is Detective Sergeant with the Bay City Police Department, serving under Captain Dobey. He and Starsky are best friends and like to show their devotion for one another, often by touching A LOT. Hutch has this chest touching he does when he’s hot, too. He uses a Colt Python .357 Magnum which has a six inch barrel, making an overall length of 11.5 inches. His favorite snitch and all-around good friend is named Huggy Bear.

Overview of the show/etc:

They’re cops in Bay City, working Homicide, often doing undercover work. They mainly ride around in the Torino and are the most conspicuous undercover cops you’ll ever meet. There were a lot of tense episodes and it was often said to be the most graphic and real show of the time because of the issues it dealt with—racism, rape, and drug abuse (Hutch even got hooked on heroin in one episode). The women of the show didn’t last long because they were almost always raped, killed, or scared away by the gritty reality of the job; often all three. It’s all about the love, the devotion, the caring between these two partners who are best friends and possibly more.

The funny thing is...that carry pic? Umm, that's the way Hutch carried Starsky in the series. I mean, EVERYTIME Starsky got shot or hurt or something, Hutch is there ready to pick him up with a hand betwen the legs. Canonical slash...it's the best.

There's a red "no-picture" x where I suspect the "carry pic" is supposed to be. Can you reupload or fix or whatever has to be done so I can see this faboo image with my own eyes?

I couldn't sleep last night for all the S & H story imagery going through my head... and I haven't even seen an episode! Can't wait till I know what the canon REALLY is and start writing.

I aim to please:) I was going to find some screengrabs to include so I could show the slash evidence, but 90% of the pictures were slashy, so I gave up;) To prove the canonical homoerotica I love to tell my "entry into fandom" story. I was involved in the EGPAF and heard that her husband was famous for a show, so I decided to watch an ep. I remember it very clearly. It was Death Ride, the scene in the diner, when Hutch eats off of Starsky's plate. Never having seen this show before, my first thought was "Oh my gosh, they're in love with each other." (My strong thought was, oh my gosh they're DOING each other, but I'm tasteful;) That fact was so strong that I couldn't pay attention to the plot. So, I didn't watch another episode for a long time.

After a while, though, I came to realize that "yes, they're in love with one another, but they're also great cops with bigs guns and a great car...not to mention their bodies!" That was it, I fell hard. I have happily never looked back at the GEN writing life. I write, read, and beta Starsky/Hutch fics and enjoy every minute of it. I currently have a zine put out by In Person Press called "Unseen Boundaries." It won the 2003 SCREWZ Award for best SH Novel! I've got another short story coming out at ZebraCon and am currently working on its prequel as well as another zine that will run at least 200 pages.

And if I still couldn't pay attention to the plots on some episodes, all I have to do is mute the sound and just watch Starsky strut his stuff in those illegal jeans. Ahem, ok...onward!

The funny thing about a lot of the slash "evidence" is that to me it's evidence of a great friendship. I noticed in one epi that Starsky takes Hutch's coffee and drinks from it, then Hutch takes it back and drinks from it. But later in the same epi Starsky takes Huggy's beer and drinks from it before Huggy takes it back and walks off drinking from it. Snow Storm I think is the epi. I don't think it means anything sexual, otherwise you got a threesome going on. *grin*

When women do this type of thing its not considered slash, just men. Kinda odd. But I always figure whatever your bag is, man, that's cool. lol! Can you tell I'm a child of the '70's?

What I really like best is the friendship. Watching the show you saw friends that would never drift apart or get into some silly fight and not be friends anymore. Real and true friends that are so rare in real life.

Oh my god, those pictures!

I remember the show from reruns mostly, early 80s I think, and it was the first inkling I had of slash. Took many years for me to find out that what I was thinking actually had a name.

Anyway, great summary, brought back good memories of my two favorite epis: the strung-out Hutch episode you mention and the one where Starsky gets shot in the italian restaurant.

Wish they would come out with this on DVD.

Thanks for liking the summary:) Pretty boys in pretty pictures...it's wonderful. As for the DVDs, we're hoping that the movie that doesn't exist which is using the SH name will spur the industry to bring out the series on DVD as opposed to the video collection presented by Columbia House.

I can safely say I love both the movie and the show for what they are. I don't for one minute think the movie is a "true" representation of S&H and I can see why a lot of fans would be upset, but I'm not. I thought the spoof was done with a lot of love. The movie was a lot of fun for me and is slashy and sweet, the show has the ability to melt my spine with its depictions love and devotion between the guys.

JMO, and I'm not out to step on the toes of folks who were disappointed or angered by the movie, I'm not going to try and defend it. I'd just like to let y'all know that there are a few of us who are happy to play with Owen, Ben and Snoop as well as Paul, David and Antonio ;-)

I first heard of this through a The Sentinel crossover by Candy Apple which was excellent.

It was on before I was born, but I understand my best friend's sister got years of pleasure torturing her with the slashiness of it. So Good Times.

Did they really compliment each other's asses? Oh, do you guys know if or where there is a bloopers tape for this show? BestF's sister is looking for one?

I've seen one eppy that on TVland with my rm. We loved the hell out of it. Thanks for the re-cap.

I started reading this as soon as I got, sitting here at 7AM on a Saturday, and got to the butt part. I HAD to respond;)

The TS crossover is Outside Influences and partially how Candy and April (Valentine) got me into the fandom fully. They're great people to pimp you into a show you already saw the slash in;) I would suggest you read ALL the sequels to Outiside Influences on Candy's page because they're just awesome.

The show was on before I was born as well. Officially, I'm (I think) still the youngest member of the fandom and love to tease that I was negative four months when the show stopped filming. But age doesn't matter as long as you find the boys at some point.

Number one, the butt thing. OK, pinching was their big thing. They pinched each other's butts in over half the episodes. It's great to watch them because one of the boys will say "Somebody pinch me" and sure enough, the other one will...right on the butt;)

Number two, bloopers. There is indeed a blooper tape. However, it's passed around among fans, so the quality is not good. That doesn't matter, though, because they're hilarious. If you ever come to con, the blooper tape is always shown at the SH party. But, to tempt you, here's the link to some screencaps.

Columbia House is the best place to get episodes, aside from fans. The TV versions are ALWAYS cut and often cuts out the best scenes (the slashiest scenes;) I hope you get a chance to watch some uncut eps to get a real feel for the extent of the slash that runs in this show.

I'm not sure if I read the sequels. I will definitely check out Candy's site again to double-check. My friend is going to E-con in November, so maybe she will be able to track down a copy of the tape there.

I'm going to see about getting ahold of some of these. How long was it on? Tiff [the roommate] loved it too, so it would be fun to do a fandom together.

Thank you for taking the time to recap the S&H. I was only a young child when the show was on the air, but I was able to catch the show during its syndication. I never saw the "light" until I came across this EPIC S&H fic called, "Total Eclipse of the Heart".

Total Ecclipse is THE zine for the fandom. Flamingo has been a great asset to the fandom and created a zine that captures the true feeling of SH. I'm glad to call her a friend, as well as a writer who we all look up to:)

Tight Jeans

That reminds me of looking at screencaps the other night. Sarah(my daughter) was like "Whoa, Starsky's pants are so tight in that one, his guys are so in your face!"('guys' is her interesting teenaged expression for "package")

You know, naked would have been less sexy, I decided. Talk about getting to know someone "intimately". Nothing much left to the imagination. I still can't believe they got those jeans past the censors.

I tell you, there were some episodes where the jeans got all my attention. I swear they had gay camera men on that show. There's an inordinate amount of ass cam. Fine by me...
Even if you hate an episode, there's always the jeans.....

You do realize that the episodes that have Starsky's most...out-there shots of his tight jeans are episodes Paul directed, right? The same is true of David in those same episode. They shot each other so well, it was like they were making love to the camera.
