"Starsky and Hutch": An Overview

Pics & Bios:

I’m not making this stuff up.

Detective Sergeant David Michael Starsky—Played by Paul Michael Glaser.

He’s the curly-headed one. Left-handed, drove his 1974 Candy Apple Red Ford Torino (license plate number 537-ONN), and often drove Hutch to distraction. He also wore VERY tight jeans which made the viewing experience that much more pleasurable. Though concrete facts in the SH universe are often absent, his birth-date is often said to be the same as Paul himself, March 25, 1943. He was born in New York and his father was killed when he was very young (believed to be a cop). His mother (who is still alive and whom he calls every Friday) sent him away from the family (he has one brother named Nick) to live with his Uncle Al and Aunt Rosie in California. He may (or may not) have joined the Army, but we know he joined the Academy and that’s the beginning of the partnership with Hutch. His current rank is Detective Sergeant with the Bay City Police Department, serving under Captain Dobey. He and Hutch are best friends and like to show their devotion for one another, often by touching A LOT. Starsky often finds any way possible to unbutton his shirt down to mid-chest, so he shows off his chest hair. He uses a Smith & Wesson Model 59 9mm automatic, but is often referred to as a Baretta. His favorite snitch and all-around good friend is named Huggy Bear.

Kenneth Richard Hutchinson-Played by David Soul.

He’s the blond one. Right-handed, drove a horrid Ford LTD (license plate 573-CPE) that looked like it was condemned, but thankfully he mostly rode in the Torino. He came from money, fine Minnesota money. It’s not known about his family, but his mother is still alive during the series because he mentions her. He was once married to Vanessa, but they divorced and during the third season she is killed (we cried…joyful tears). In the pilot he mentions a Nancy, which may have been Vanessa’s nickname or may have been the first Mrs. Hutchinson. He may or may not have gone to medical school before he joined the Academy, but he sure knows a lot about medicine. He joined the Academy and that’s the beginning of the partnership with Starsky. His current rank is Detective Sergeant with the Bay City Police Department, serving under Captain Dobey. He and Starsky are best friends and like to show their devotion for one another, often by touching A LOT. Hutch has this chest touching he does when he’s hot, too. He uses a Colt Python .357 Magnum which has a six inch barrel, making an overall length of 11.5 inches. His favorite snitch and all-around good friend is named Huggy Bear.

Just so you know who they are:

Dobey

Huggy

Overview of the show/etc:

They’re cops in Bay City, working Homicide, often doing undercover work. They mainly ride around in the Torino and are the most conspicuous undercover cops you’ll ever meet. There were a lot of tense episodes and it was often said to be the most graphic and real show of the time because of the issues it dealt with—racism, rape, and drug abuse (Hutch even got hooked on heroin in one episode). The women of the show didn’t last long because they were almost always raped, killed, or scared away by the gritty reality of the job; often all three. It’s all about the love, the devotion, the caring between these two partners who are best friends and possibly more.

Oh my god, those pictures!

I remember the show from reruns mostly, early 80s I think, and it was the first inkling I had of slash. Took many years for me to find out that what I was thinking actually had a name.

Anyway, great summary, brought back good memories of my two favorite epis: the strung-out Hutch episode you mention and the one where Starsky gets shot in the italian restaurant.

Wish they would come out with this on DVD.

Thanks!

And why do you think I'm here? :D Saw a sneak preview of the movie (which I loved, honest) a couple weeks ago, and was intrigued to check out its source material. I think I've found a new love.

SO glad to hear that fans are actually seeking out the originals:)

Oh, you bet! And God bless the 'net as what used to take months or years - hooking into a new fandom - can now be done in days, hours or even MINUTES with just a click of the mouse!

Glad to have you and hope you enjoy the boys and the fics.

Glad to be here and I'm sure I will. I've been around so long I remember when David Soul was on "Here Come the Brides" (watched it, um, first run....).

So, got any particularly smarmy recs for me? I'm a sucker for h/c.

There's over 50 SH recs in the memories already and I'll start on this month's later on in the week. If you get really interested, you should join the SH community at starsky_hutch

Wow, this is almost overwhelming. And I thought there was a lot of history in Real Ghostbusters (my current fandom) which has been going about 15 years - S & H is almost double that. Wow again.

I'll wade my way through the recs at home tonight (looks like the housework will be put off yet again...)

Wow, I wrote that comment? The spellling!
My eyes!

I wish I could say I was high or something, but I don't even remember typing this - ick.

So, umm, Starsky & Hutch DVDs? Yay! Even the NY Times had a good size article on the release of the first season and the movie. They made special mention of the cop luuuuv. Heh.

Logovo writing when she is not in her right mind? Bad.

That's okay - typing on the fly leads to interesting results, doesn't it? And I'm sure you MEANT those three "Ls" in "spellling" above. ;)

Yes, I'm about a 1/2 hour away from ordering it on Amazon.com.

Yeah, I'm not sure if that's the review I found or not, but some article reviewed a classic moment by saying it was the "gayest scene outside Middle Earth".

I'm a grizzled old fangirl who's been writing fic (with varying degrees of inspiration and success) for 30+ years. My current fandom is Real Ghostbusters. Don't know how I missed S & H all those years ago but I'll soon make up for lost time. I already have story inklings swirling in my brain (but won't write any until I've seen the first season - not going to write-to-the-fic, y'know?).

"spellling"

Umm, yeah, I meant to type that. *facepalm*

Yes, that's the one!!! It had that oh-so-very cute picture of them frolicking on the beach in their little white t-shirts. Cuter than puppies :)

30+ years

Good to read that. I've been in fandom for about 11 years but my contact with other fans has been mainly online. I was invited to a birthday party up in Los Angeles last month and when I got there was a little distressed when I realized I had been around a lot longer than most people there.

Real Ghostbusters

Hey, I've never seen those stories. Any site you would recommend?

I figure I was born fannish and, once I was old enough to drive, dedicated myself to finding other fans. We're talking the OLD DAYS with networking, hoping and praying to find like-minded individuals. Last time I had to network into something was about '93, but used those detective skills in conjunction with those newfangled things, emails and discussion lists. Since then, tho', it's been all 'net, all the time. Whee!

I was invited to a birthday party up in Los Angeles last month

You're near Los Angeles? Where?! I'm just south of LAX. Maybe when I get my first-season DVDs you could be my native guide....

Real Ghostbusters

The site of all sites is Sheila Paulson's at:
http://users.aol.com/venkie/rgb/rgb.htm

If it's gen and on the 'net, you'll find it linked there. She doesn't do slash so you have to dig around a bit more, but I can point you toward a great site (these ladies do the most AMAZING smarm, and super slash too):

http://oplnk.net/~mara/home.htm

(And Mara wrote a Real Ghostbusters story inspired buy "The Fix" called "A Simple Class Four". Check it out.)

My own stuff can be found on ff.net under the user name of RGB Robbie.
http://www.fanfiction.net/profile.php?userid=202933

I think "Tap" is the best of my stories on there, and should give you an idea of the kind of stories I write.

(And I've already got an idea for Starsky undercover in a mental hospital, where he is forced to undergo ECT when he's found out, leading to seizures and memory gaps... and of COURSE he is rescued by Hutch who must deal with his disoriented and VULNERABLE - one of my personal kinks, vulnerability is - partner as he tries to bring him back to himself... sigh...)

Wow and *wow*. I remember thinking my fannish obsessions were just how my own little brain worked so it never occurred to me that others might have been considering the same thoughts, specially the slash stuff. How did you first meet up with other fans and writers?

I wish I had more information on fandom before the internet because I got online around 1994 before I knew there was anything as organized as fandom anywhere. I was born in Tijuana, Mex. and lived there up to last October when I married and moved to San Diego. It would have been great to have discovered fanfic before my 20's.

It would be great fun!

Thanks for the links, I'm going over them tonight.

Your S&H idea? I'm very interested, hope you decide to write after going over your new DVDs :)

I can safely say I love both the movie and the show for what they are. I don't for one minute think the movie is a "true" representation of S&H and I can see why a lot of fans would be upset, but I'm not. I thought the spoof was done with a lot of love. The movie was a lot of fun for me and is slashy and sweet, the show has the ability to melt my spine with its depictions love and devotion between the guys.

JMO, and I'm not out to step on the toes of folks who were disappointed or angered by the movie, I'm not going to try and defend it. I'd just like to let y'all know that there are a few of us who are happy to play with Owen, Ben and Snoop as well as Paul, David and Antonio ;-)

Thanks for your synopsis, btw, and the pretty pictures!
